Default si tranny carnage

well here are the pics from my dead tranny. for the last 10k or so i had a whirring noise coming from my tranny and most people told me it was the main input shaft bearing. i was also told dont bother changing it and just ride it out because nothing will happen. common sense should have told me otherwise but nope. so im crusing in 5th when it goes, and i cant shift out of 5th.

i dropped the tranny and split the case. of course enough metal shaving stew to feed a family and ball bearings all over. the only damage was the bearing, the outer-most gear on the input shaft and then the piece in the last picture.

would it be worth my time to just replace these 3 pieces (gear, bearing, bracket piece) and throw the tranny back together and use it or to just fork out a couple hundred dollars for some other cable si tranny? money is very very very very tight and i need this thing on the road in about 2 weeks.

here are the pics.

this is the 2nd ive gone through within 30k, i kind of just want to rebuild it so i know what i have instead of chancing with another... also its hard to find them cheap around here, most yards want 400-500 for one with around 120k... not cool.

thats up to you. its certainly possible since only the final drive is different, but keep in mind you need to reuse the pinion along with the diff ring to change out the final drive. but the pinion is part of the mainshaft (or is it counter shaft?) which has small oil passages inside. MAKE SURE you clean out all the little silver crap inside of it before reusing. i mean 100%. a clogged oil port will kill your bearings again.

its not a lot of work to crack open a tranny and take it apart. but if its your first time, youll have some learning to do. im sure you can find a decent tranny for $150.

alright thanks for the info.

btw would i notice a huge difference between the si tranny and the dx? would i be dissapointed? yeah i know the si is sportier and i liked the gearing of my previous trannys, just dont want to pass up this $50 deal... budget is super tight for an un-employed teenager.

anyone want to trade a d16z6 head for an si tranny?

The DX 5-spd tranny will feel slower, but you should get better gas mileage.

Oh, and another thing... If the DX tranny is from a different year than the tranny you have now, you will need a clutch. Different years use different clutches... but I think that 90 ans 91 are the same... not positive about that though. BTW, $50 is a pretty good deal if the tranny works well. I doubt you will find a Si tranny for that cheap.

although gas mileage is a concern ill be driving a d16a6 at 8psi, would it be better with long gears plus boost? probably to laggy? hmmm.

also my clutch is shot anyway so i need a new one.

depending on your boost curve and powerband you may be better of with a dx tranny. the longer gears are sometimes good to aid in spool rather than having to keep shifting and trying to build up boost after each shift

agreed. while others are shifting, you are pulling ahead.

yeah, those 3 things i meantioned are the only things visibly damaged, aside from metal shavings galore. im taking it to my friends dads shop so he can let me know whether i can just get those parts instead of going and getting a whole new tranny. still looking into a dx tranny... rather have the si though.

i would just get a new one, i wouldnt trust any of the bearings left in there since all that metal was floating around, your looking at over $200 if you replace just the bearings. get a used one

oem bearings and shims add up...
a less expensive way is to score a dx trans, and take the bearings off that.
i think hydro bearings can be used as well, only if the donor trans is post 90'

taking out bearings and reusing them is a bad idea. once a bearing is installed, in order to pull it out, you have to force the inner race against the ball bearings which is just not good for the bearing.

just use the DX tranny as is. i dont know anything about turbo's, but what other ppl are saying makes sense. the taller FD might be beneficial for you.

you can keep your counter stack together. and not compromise your bearings.
the only thing taht would be changed is the ring gear/on the diff. diff shims shouldnt change in size, but they might. case shims might need to be re evaluated though
