Default Type R Oil Cooler Install...complete!!!!!

Hey Gang,

Here is an update on my oil cooler install. I got all the parts and pieces together and installed on Saturday and Sunday this weekend(3-23&24-02). It was not the easiest install in the world to make...that is for sure. It went together very well after I figured out all the locations for the various pieces. Honda does not leave on inch free with out putting something in it. I took the car out for a hard run on Sunday afternoon and the oil temps are staying well in check now..about 210 degrees at max. The outside air was at about 75 degrees. I have only had one oil leak show up. I guess it's a fitting not snugged down enough. It's only dropping a tiny amount of oil, but I plan on getting into it later this week to see if I can get it fixed. I hope I don't have to take off the front bumper again ;-)

Anyway I just wanted to say thanks for all your help. Here is a link to the installed cooler, plus a materials list. I haven't added up how much it cost, and I don't want too ;-) I'll post more pictures of the car once I have all the leaks stopped, and a good coat of wax on it!

Some numbers as an FYI:

Before the cooler After the cooler
Max temp = 250+ 210 MAX
Oil Press @ 3.5Krpm = 76PSI Oil Press @ 3.5Krpm = 74PSI
Oil Press @Idle = 25PSI Oil Press @Idle = 25PSI
Total oil in system = 4.2 Qts Total oil in system = 5.5 Qts

Here is the web page with the info and pictures!

Heater NOT Cooler

I understand the cooler temp is now 210.

But what parameters for the 250+ figure?

Nice job, and thanks for the write up.

Probably similar to what Warren has planned.
But here's the question, will it fit with an intercooler taking up space in the nose?

I thought it might have been the cruise control stuff.....that's the only thing that was missing from the R cars under the hood,vs the GS-R...thanks for the FYI

It's possible it will fit with an intercooler. I just depends on the thickness of the core of the intercooler. I have about 3 more inches of thickness I could have used for an intercooler...if I had a turbo that is

"250+ (F) on track?"

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Yep...it would get to 250 plus degrees in the oil pan at the end of a session at VIR full course. I saw this happen every session 3 weeks ago when I was with the BMW guys up there.

I hope I have it cured now.

I might have to get a front end kit or cut through the nose around the .

Sort of explains why Steve was telling me the fluidyne wouldn't fit with all that other "necessary" stuff.

The 250 degrees is bone stock Type R. I was during track runs. I have a temp sender in the oil pan, so the oil was probably hotter once it got up in the engine. I was freaked out the first time it happened. I don't understand why Honda dosen't correct this from the factory. My local R mechanic told me this is the #1 thing that causes Honda engines to fail on track.

----------------------------------------------------------------

It was on hot...but not with the fan blowing.....I don't thik I could get a lot cooler oil with the fan going...I doubt a 1 for 1 drop in water vs oil temp could be exspected...but you never know

I doubt it is this time of year....come December I will find out. One could do it without it and save some major bucks! The down side is you have a long while to wait for the oil to warm in the winter........if it was a track only car,I wouldn't have not put in the thermostat.

Nice install and pictures.

How did you attach the lines to the fittings? Is there a special tool?
