Default HELP!!! GSR or B16 TRANNY

i have heard mixed opionons on the difference between the two. As far as i know they are very similar in 1st 2nd 3rd gear the difference is in the 4th and 5th. meaning the GSR is longer in gear 4 & 5. i can get either one i just want to have a longer final drive.. please give your input with which one would be better. thanks

I would never advise anyone to take a short geared tranny and slap in an LS 5th gear in it. you'll fall flat on your face when shifting from 4th to 5th. I've tried this already with an ITR tranny with pathetic results on a B20/Vtec motor. I would suggest just getting a GSR tranny and be happy with that. 80mph you'll be at 4k which is still bearable.

JDM ITR also has a shorter final drive at 4.785 vs. the USDM's 4.40. But yeah, the only difference between the b16 and USDM ITR is the b16's lack of lsd.

all the gears are shorter on the b16, except 1st. but you'll cruise about 500 rpm higher on the freeway.

5500 is exagerated..... my gsr tranny +4.785 FD runs 4500 at 80 mph
(and this is a shorter 5th gear than the B16 with the stock 4.4 FD)

a short geared tranny is a bit to get used to at first but i think if performance is your goal you will be happy with the B16 as your choice

and to clarify b16 has shorter gears than the gsr 2-5

so ur pulling ur b20/vtec and putting in an ls/vtec?

5500 rpms isnt overexaggerated... i cruise at 4500 at 60mph with my b16 tranny...

So you have done this? I currently have a ls fifth in a 92 ys1 GSR tranny. I didn't notice any falling on my face even witha little b17? Are you saying at 110 or 120mph(whenever you shift from 4th to 5th) that you car losses poweror falls on it's face. lol. difference is like 3% drop. Whats that, maybe 3-400rpms. I plan to swap out my gsr tranny for a b16(oem lsd) and already have the ls fifth to swap. I'll take the 2-5% fuel increase cause I drivwe like 50k mils ayear.

yes i have and it's not just a 300-400 rpm drop, it's more like 500+ rpm drop and it's very noticeable.

a B16/ITR tranny with an 94+ LS 5th running the 4.4 final drive @ 80 mph is running around 3600 rpm compared to a stock B16/ITR 5th gear which is at 4300-4500 rpm. there's a huge difference there.
