Default Having a hard time telling which engine I have... Not stock head?

Alright so my girlfriend bought a civic recently and it doesn't have any ex or dx on it so I am having a hard time telling which engine she has. From what I was able to gather the only vtec engine in 95 civics was the D16Z6. But I figured I would be able to see that stamped on the engine. I am wondering if perhaps at one point the previous owner of teh car blew the engine because it looks like there is a new head on it.

^^^ Looks like different head than was originally in the car unless stock honda engines come with the temp sensors.

^^ Only stamp I could find on the engine..

yay for Sandy Utah! anyway, if im not mistaken, ZC's are normally DOHC 1.6's. What year of civic is it? that will tell you what motor is suppose to be in there.

Possibly a SOHC ZC with a mini-me swap?

Hrmmm interesting.

THe car is a '95.

From this link..
https://honda-tech.com/zero...33126

These are the engine specs that I found..
D16Z6
Displacement (cc): 1590
Power (bhp@rpm): 125@6600
Torque (ft/lbs@rpm): 106@5200
Compression Ratio: 9.2:1
Bore (mm): 75
Stroke (mm): 90
Cam Design: sohc
VTEC?: yes
OBD: 1
Year(s) Produced: 1992-1995
In the following car(s): Honda Civic EX/Si/Del Sol Si

What relevance does ZC have?

Looks like a really clean head compared to the rest of the engine. Looked under the oil cap and everything inside looks realllly clean.

This car according to the ODO has 170K on it

zc's do come in sohc. if you get a dohc and blow the head they are so hard to get that you end up having to settle for sohc. it is the only block honda made that you can swap like that.

Well I am a bit confused. So as far as doing a tuneup with new plugs and wires etc... should I just go off of what Autozone has listed for the D16Z6? Or the EX model rather?

There is nothing stamped on the heatshield over teh header if that is what you are thinking. Do you mean under the heatshield?

My question wasn't whether it had vtec or not. I was concerned it had a newer head than was originally installed on the vehicle and I am having a hard time figuring it out.

yea under the header shield. there should be a stamping. it will give you a year and some other numbers post them or take a pic and someone can tell you.

UGH

yes its a SOHC VTEC. use a SOHV VTEC engine as your guide for parts (92 SI, 98 EX ect ect)

yes ZC's are sohc alot of the time. in fact id venture to say MOST if not ALL obd1 zc's are sohc.

and no, this is not the ONLY engine honda has ever made to take both a dohc and a sohc head. my moms JDM F22B has a DOHC head on it.

oh ya that bolt below the stamp on the motor taht attaches the trans looks loose. id tighten that.

Thanks for the info man I appreciate it. Thanks for pointing out that bolt too

Oh and all and all would you say that this engine is not the one that was originally in it seeing how that temp sensor is on the head?
