Default I dont even want to ask this question,

But my curiousity is getting the best of me.......Ive been looking to purchase a crank and pulley for my y8 for some time now, and I get plenty of offers for cranks, but no pulley.

My question is.......When I look on ebay, and see there are several different pulleys ranging in price from like $30, to almost $200. what is the REAL difference between them all? I intend on using an OEM unit, but like I said I'm curious

use common sense. A $30 one is more prone to break than a $200 one. But, that $200 one might just be overpriced because its a AEM or something like that. I would stick to OEM stuff because u know it wont break or should not come with defects. Whatever the Honda engineers put on there was for a reason. But to really answer your question, the difference will be weight and brand. Weights will differ because they may be made of different materials.

Yeah, and 9 times out of 10 that "Reason" is because these cars are econobox's. You can almost always make an improvement over the crap on these cars. So to imply that because Honda did it makes it better is just ignorant.

What I've seen of the pulley's they are pretty much all the same. There not gonna break. None of them are balanced including the AEM stuff. But there's no harmonic balancer built in them so it puts more stress on the crank bearings and apparently in some cases causes premature engine failure. Not a chance most people are willing to take for a few HP.

Yeah... Like brusk said, the aftermarket ones are just solid metal while the OEM ones have a harmonic dampener/balancer whatever... It helps absorb shock and vibrations that would otherwise be transferred to the crank. There was one aftermarket company that made lightened cranks a while back for b-series engines with a harmonic balancer but I can't remember the name.

You only get a couple horsepower maybe, not really worth the extra stress you'll put the crank under. And yeah, some things, such as pulleys, OEM is better. Honda has a little bit more to spend on research than these ebay companies. In this case OEM is better...

I figured there wasnt going to be much of a difference in them. Like I said, I intend on using an oem unit, but my curiosity got the best of me.

Well yea like everyone says...if your going N/A dont even bother wasting your money on pulleys your going to end up wasting you money on a new engine because your going to be hearing a bearing knocking pretty soon...but on the other hand if your going to fully built a motor and want to get the best out of it especially on boost yea you can waste the extra money on pulleys and take it to a machine shop and balance your whole bottom end along with a light weight flywheel and you will have no problem.
