Default Welding Razor Blades

Well, I've finished my Advanced TIG course - the final exam was to weld razor blades sharp edge to sharp edge. I'll try to post a picture of my finished product.

I completed the weld after burning up numerous blades. I was welding on a Syncrowave 250 DX, with the current set to about 10 amps [1/16" tungsten, 1/16" 308L filler rod]. It's very tricky to get the arc started without melting the razor blade - even the one that I passed on there is some melted razor where I started, but not much. Ending the weld is very difficult too, as heat has nowhere to go so usually it just melts.

Anyhow, I look forward to getting a machine of my own now that I can weld!

You have to arc up on the welding rod to not blow a hole in the blades. I'll take a picture tonight and post it.

DCEN, you know, I didn't even think of trying DCEP! Maybe I'll try that next week.

Here it is, sorry for the shitty quality, my camera doesn't like to get in close. I weld left to right, even though I'm right handed [don't know why, first time I picked up the torch it was in the left hand]. You can see a small part where I did melt the blades when first striking an arc, but the rest is pretty good...no burn through on the end.

I would like to try the coke can thing. What I don't understand is how you stop to turn the can. If I stopped mid way on the razors and had to strike a new arc, it immediately blew a hole in my work.

I just did it with some box cutter blades. The edge is just as thin but they're a little thicker where they attach to the handle. So I'll pick some up that are the same as what you did it with and post em up on Monday.

you should try fusing them together...makes the bead super tiny at low current. good job...it aint easy

i decided to go try it out. Used lincoln pt185 15amps, 23cfm, 1/16 308L filler, was to lazy to switch from 3/32 to my 1/16th so i just sharpened it to an excessive point ha. starts and stops are f'ed but i like how it turned out

will get a better camera within the next couple days

I was going to say that untill I saw your post. Also if you get the tungsten hot on a piece right next to your work .And then move over real quick .It starts way easier.Thats an old Mold repair trick. So you don't melt the part your welding before it even starts.

Looks good, I'll have to give this a try once I pick up a welder in a few months.

Megapixels have nothing to do with the picture being blurry like that. Try resting the camera against something so that it doesn't shake when you take the picture.
