Default Vtec engaging. Sounds like it kicks in at 3,000 rpm

Someone else had the car before me and somewhat fixed it up and how do i no exactly when vtec is engaged. when im driving in 2nd or 3rd gear and i have the throttle pushed down a certain distance, around 3,000 -> 4,000rpm's i hear a whistling noise / pssh noise that will just make that noise until i let off the gas. and sometimes if i push the gas down half way real quick and it makes a small pssh / whistle noise. i dunno if the guy changed when the vtec kicks in but isnt it suppost to actually kick in at 5,800rpm? And from what i desribed does that sound like vtec or what could that be? and how can i tell if my vtec kicks in at 5,800 or not?

What car? what motor? what mods? Let's try to not be so vague.

d16y8 engine. 97ex civic coupe

. short ram intake (looks to be a cheap *** ebay one) but with a matrix air filter. other then that i dunno if the guy did anything else to the engine or not. all i added was a valve breather and thats about it for engine wise.

just wondering. heres a pic just to give u an idea

You cant feel/hear vtec changeover in a single cam, atleast I never have seen a single cam that has a feeling/sound to its vtec changeover....its probably your intake whistling..I know alot of the intakes off ebay do that...plus you have one of the holes open on it...that could cause this also

Are you sure you even have VTEC, I don't see a VTEC solenoid. Maybe I'm just not seeing it?

should have vtec. its a 97civic coupe ex. those are d16y8 and all come with vtec right. but to be honest ive never knew how to tell the difference if vtec kicks in or not. i no it kicks in around 5800rpm but my exhaust is so loud at that rpm it all sounds the same when floored

vtec kicks in at 5500 on a y8. wire up a VTEC light and you will know when its engaging. Its very hard to hear VTEC on a single cam, I was having issues with mine recently and I wired up the light, its good to use as a rough diagnostic tool.

I'm with you, I know someone that had a throttlebody problem with their D-series and when someone started messing with the throttle cable it would never stop whistling after that. It happened when you pushed on the gas about half way down but if you pushed the gas full throttle then it would stop. The problem is that the throttlebody cable needs to be adjusted, try adjusting it a bit and then try to see how it sounds until you don't hear it anymore.

Yeah VTEC comes in at around 5500 RPM and in my car if I hold the Rev around 6000 RPM the exhaust is cut out and its pure engine spinning thats when vtec is engaged and when then floored it pulls harder than any other part of the powerband. I have I/H/E but my exhaust is cut off around 5K RPM. When you floor it around the 2500-3000 RPM range the intake is opened up since the Throttle body is fully open and it makes the loud VROOM noise that makes you think you have power but its just a lot of noise. As for the sucking or whisteling my AEM short ram breathes the same way sounds kind of like a spooling turbo.

ok to end all opinions of sohc vtec debate here, you can hear and feel vtec kick in when you have intake and exhaust.. ive rode in no less than 11 cars with it and you can hear and feel it.. its not like a b series kick, its more like a gsr's intake runners opening kick... its not much but, it is there.

You could feel it and hear it with a B16 ECU on a Z6. Engaging it at a higher RPM than stock makes it louder, and since your running the low RPM lobes well past their power, it suddenly jumps on the VTEC lobes, giving you a HUGE kick over.

Since I have had Z6 and B16, each running both ECU's in my EJ1 coupe, I can give perfect testimony.

Adversely, using a stock P28 SOHC ECU makes VTEC on a B16 feel and sound weak.

It's in the ECU, and VTEC point.

You can see the solenoid right under the valvecover breather in the first pic.I had a d16y8 in my 97 civic and i could hear vtec barely with just an intake, but i could hear it very good with I/H/E and some days even feel it. and vtec is at about 5500

This **** is too funny... The whistle isn't vtec kicking in. It's def. your intake and it's not just "ebay" intakes that do this, it's just intakes in general. Also vtec kicks in on your engine between 4800-5200 rpms. It's detemined by a few variables as to when exactly it will cross over and runs off of oil pressure.

I use to drive around in SOHC VTEC cars thinking that I could feel and hear VTEC, then I got a K20A2, then Prelude, then GSR, and finally a B16A. In my personal opinion, you do not feel, or hear VTEC at all with a SOHC motor with bolt ons. I thought I did, but I was wrong. Ride in a DOHC VTEC car, then you will know what VTEC really is all about.

I'm not gonna argue that SOHC's have mad VTAK yo, but to say that it's a fact that nobody can hear or feel it in there single slams is just ignorant. Your experience/opinion is not the be all, end all on the subject. It's exactly that, YOUR opinion. All engines vary slightly and peoples experiences are different and I CAN hear vtec in mine. I will give you it's friggin' weak sauce compared to just about any other series of vtec engines but I hear it none the less.

ok, well, I wont argue. Maybe it was just all the SOHC VTEC cars that I drove.

maybe theres the turbo whister from ebay mounted in the exhaust, and that is what is making the PSHHH sound...

.....
its your intake resonance point at 3K ur engine starts sukin more air and sisnce u have an intake it sounds like that, every single car does it pull off the bottom half of any stock air box and rev the car it will sounds like that or sokmething similar IMO i like it
