Default Poor gas mileage, car dies around 3grand, can't check for codes

My friend just purchased a 92 Civic DX, and the check engine light is on. He's getting around 10mpg as well. He'll accelerate, and at around 3grand, the car just dies.. loses its power, won't go beyond that. We tried checking the codes, but it's not working. I tried it, my friend tried it, who also has done it several times before. We put the paper clip in, turn the key, and the light just stays on, doesn't blink, flash nothin. Does anyone know what might be wrong with the car?

when you say it stops at 3 grand, does it hit fuel cutoff or what?

for it to not make power to carry it beyond 3 grand in any gear I've never seen...does it sound ok?

Prior to 3grand it sounds absolutely fine. Maybe it is the fuel cut its hitting, I'm not exactly sure though.

does it sound like it's turning off or does it just sound fine just not going up past 3grand?

with fuel cutoff it almost sounds like the engine is hitting a brick wall

It's just not going past 3 grand. It does short little cut offs. And we're going to go pick up an ECU from the junkyard today, see if that'll help with the fact it won't throw us codes =p

Solid CEL = bad ecu or chip generally. And 3k and 10mpg does also.

This would be my guess too.

Yes sir, we actually replaced the ECU, and it's working great now... except the fact he picked up an AT ECU for his MT vehicle. So we get code 19 I believe it is, but have been told if he picks up the MT ECU it'll go away.

Convert the ecu to manual yourself, it's a piece of cake.
