Interested in painting my car. Some info would really help me out!
Hey everybody! I have been debating whether or not to paint my eg sedan for the past 6 months and i have come to a conclusion. I want to paint the car satin black with a clear coat. I have a lot of rust in the rear quarter panels so here's what i'm gonna do. 1)sand car get rid of all the clear coat and paint 2) send car out to get all rust and dents to get fixed 3)get car back and put 3 coats of primer, 5 coats of rustoleum satin black and 3 coats of clear 4) wet sand and touch up So if anyone can offer any tips i'd be extremely appreciative. Also what kind of techniques did you guys use to spray and sand the car. Thanks!
tip 1, you don't need to get rid of all your old paint unless it's peeling etc.
tip 2, only use 3 coats of primer if you need it, otherwise it's useless paint.
tip 3, no air or power sanders. If sanding with sand paper, this is where you can make your paint look nice or like crap, so find someone who knows what they're doing and have them explain.
tip 4, if you're not stripping the paint, a gray scotch brite and some mean green is all you need to prep. You'll have to tape and remove parts to prepare for sanding.
tip 5, don't use rustoleum, If you have access to an good air compressor, buy a cheap gravity feed paint gun and some real automotive satin black paint and think about doing it yourself. If you don't have access to an good air compressor, shop around for a good price for a paint job when all the shop will have to do is paint (i.e. you prep and tape, they paint)
tip 6, ask questions, estimates and questions are free, having to re-do a paint job is expensive both time and money wise.

oh yeah, 1 more thing- paint is never a crisis, if you've got rust or peeling paint, it will still be there when your're ready to work on it later. Rushing into something most of the time means more money out of your pocket later.
