Default 90' hatch NoX levels are too high!!!

I can't get my hatch to pass Texas Emissions. The inspector said my NOX level was way high.
90'hatch std-Sohc-1.5L-74hp-190,000miles-Bone stock.
Can anybody give me a list of parts that may be causing this? Parts that may need replacing? I know the whole damn engine should be replaced...not ready for a transplant just yet.
Thanks guys.

What did you call me!??...jk.
I dont know how that would help...can you explain? A few people told me it may be the cat-converter. I'm still stumped.
Thanks anyways.
Anymore ideas?

NOX usually occurs under very high combustion chamber temperatures.

Thats why efnfast1 recommended retarding the ignition timing a bit. A more advanced timing will lead to higher temps, so pulling it back by retarding it a bit should help to cool it down.

What octane are you running?

Do you have a printout showing what your measurement was, and what the allowable amount is? How much did you fail by?

Don't have the slip anymore...Fiance trashed it!!
I recently replaced the dizzy on it. Before I try again this is what I'll do:
-Seafoam gastank,intake,crankcase.
-Change oil,plugs,wires,cap & rotor,oil filter,airfilter,fuel filter
-adjust timing(if needed)
-replace cat-converter & install new oem exhaust-catback
-compression test
-add secret fuel cleaner...maybe.
Anything else??
Thanks.
If I fail again I'll post up the slip with #s.
Oh yeah...The car does overheat.I guess I'll check the fans and the thermo.
right?

I would have to agree with retarding the timing.

If you are going to go to the extent of outting new exh on your car, I would also spring for a new o2 sensor, as the non heated versions in the pre OBD cars dont seem to last too long from my experiances. They are cheap anyhow, prolly 30 for a bosch or somthing like that.

Like someone allready said, High NOX is caused by high combustion temps, so it could be timing related (most likely, or a lean issue, (could be likely if you have a chipped ECU and tried to lean out your fuel map for emissions (I did this and failed horribly in my NOX ))

Also, it helps to give the cat a little help in heating it up by holding a steady 2500-3000 rpm idle while you are in the lineup. Getting the cat warm will make it more efficient and burn off hydrocarbons, CO, and NOX better than if it was cooler.

good luck, Rob

Thanks for the advice! How do I retard the timing?

Did you smog it?

I smogged mine the other day. First time, NO levels were about 100PPM too high. I think the limit was around 840 and I had around 930. I retarded the timing and went back. The NO PPM dropped around 300 points down between 500-600!

Passed!
