Default vtec and thermostat

my thermostat needs to be replaced cause it's open all the time (i'll get to it this weekend).

would that be the reason why vtec doesn't happen and why my gas mileage is crap (low to mid 20s after filling up last week)? or should i look for other issues while I'm at it?

engine is b18c1. vtec worked last week, but not this week. I just got the car Monday of last week.

That could be your problem. I know my car has to be warm before it will even think about VTEC. And with your thermostat sticking open it may not be getting to the correct operating temp to engage VTEC.

Definatly. VTEC will only work when the car has reached operating temp. If you are running an open thermostat, i doubt it ever gets hot enough.

If you have a chipped ECU, you can bypass this.
