im just asking for a rough estimate...not an exact estimate...i've only seen the car in pictures but it seems to have a clean body and interior.

i talked to the guy..and he said that he barely drives it and that he bought the car at 5k and it was salvaged....

 

if it was salvaged due to an accident the damage was probably pretty substancial. i would never buy a car salvaged due to an accident, you will almost always run into problems.

I would never mess with a salvage car unless you are personally rebuilding it knowing exactly what you got and what you got put into it.

Not to mention the people that suffer from theft on this site are always struggling with insurance companies to get fair value for their CLEAN title ITR. Imagine trying to get insurance to pay out on a salvage title vehicle that you have 10K + invested.

 

I would be scared of a salvaged car.
- Who repaired it?
- Were they trying to save a buck when putting it back together?
- What happens at 130-140mph if they didnt torque something down right?

Personally I would rather get a mint ITR with around 100k miles for the same price. You know theres nothing wrong with it that way...

By the way, I'm getting ready to put my mint ITR (100k) up forsale for around that price range

according to the carfax, this sounds pretty true

i say pick it up in the price range of 10-12k

 

so it was driven unregistered for 24,000 miles?

 

So, the owner drove it 5,400 miles in the first 4 months of ownership. Then over the next 7 years only averaged about 3,500 miles per year. Well, since it was unregistered, maybe he only snuck it out an night.

Hmmm.

The only way I'd buy this car is if:
The tub is straight
I planned to make a dedicated race/track car out of it
I planned to keep it for a loooong time
I could buy it for 9,000 or less

Note: The car shown in my avatar is a theft recovery/salvage car bought in 2002 with 45K miles on it and I paid $11,000. As you can see...it is a dedicated race car.
We're very happy together.

 

Here's the problem.

You can take a car that is otherwise similar but hasn't been in an accident - say you have a '98 ITR with 29K miles in excellent condition. There are lots of such cars, and we know from experience how much they sell for - around $18K, maybe a little more if you hold out for a great price. If you have to sell it right away, you can sell it for a bargain price, say, $16,500, and somebody will buy it right away.

Now, take a '98 car with that mileage with a salvage title, which means it was in a VERY serious accident, serious enough that it was totalled out. All you really know is that it's not worth what it would have been worth before the accident. How much less is it worth? $2K less? $12K less? All you're doing is guessing. And the same thing is true on the selling side. If you had to turn around and re-sell it, you have absolutely no idea how much you would get for it, because you don't have comparable cars being sold every day whose prices you can use to estimate. So again, all you can do is guess. And this is why buying such a car is a risk, because you won't know how much you can re-sell it for, how much insurance might give you if it were stolen, etc.

 

To me, the shitty mods on the car decreases the value even more aside from being a salvaged title. Considering that the mileage is true and correct, at most it'd be worth $10K. The seller is asking $14,500? Damn! You can get a clean title stock with around 50-60K miles for that price! I doubt the guy would ever sell for less than $10K either. Only b/c to him it's worth more than it should be.

Is it just me, or is it interesting that the car was titled to an owner in Sullivan, WI? For those of you that have been to Sullivan, it's not that populated...and for the folk that live there, they're typically in pick-ups, SUVs, or in farm machinery.

There are a few people that I could venture to guess that would want a car like this in [at that time] Sullivan, WI.
