H22a1 Head gasket vs. H22a4 gasket
I haven't worked with an open deck block yet or seen an H22a4 head gasket yet (to see what it's differences are with the closed deck head gasket), but will be putting together an open deck H22a4 engine together shortly. Since I have an extra H22a1 head gasket lying around I was wondering if it can be used with the open deck H22a4, or should I purchase another gasket?

I don't think its the reinforcement part that's as critical as much as the fact that putting a closed deck headgasket on an open deck design would most likely block essential water passages, and could lead to overheating.
I would have to compare the two gaskets and heads to see just how much the blockages would actually affect the engine, but as stated above, I would go with the H22A4 gasket to be safe.

Yeah going with an H22a4 gasket is obviously the safe way to go. Just curious as to what the differences are & if anyone has tried, with success, using an H22a1 gasket on an open deck block?
I don't think it would block any passages, since all H22 heads are the same so the gaskets will allow similar amounts of fluid to flow through. I guess the determining factor is whether the gaskets are reinforced differently? They probably are in order to create a better seal in their respective conditions.
