225/50/16 on stock wheels
ok ok. i know its been talked about. but never really cleared up. does anyone here see any major downsides to doing this. i mean, why do those wrx drivers like em so much on their stock 6.5" wheels? wouldnt they just give you more contact with the road and perform better? who's got answers...pros/cons. thanks
Awesome, someone else who likes Aesop Rock too, heh.
Yeah, I'm with AdirondackR, I didn't know you could go that wide on only 6.5" rims... I've got 205/40zr17 on my 17x7.5" rims, but they're a bit small, I was thinking maybe 215 next time around... But seriously, 225 on 6.5" seems way off, not sure if there are any pros/cons of doing this.

well i know for sure it can be done. after all, the rim width rating on most all 225/50/16 tires is 6-8". and many guys on ephatch have them and say they actually prefer it. and a hell of a lot of wrx say the same. but i cant find anyone that can clearly tell me why or why not i should do it.
I think 225's would be pushing it, but apparently it's not impossible. They'll fit inside the wheel wells, too.
I'd like to get 225's on my possible next set of rims, which would be 7" wide. Team Dynamics Pro Race 1 wheels in a 15" size, and they'd fit over my type-s brakes.

I will be using that size tire on the same size wheel for stock class autocrossing with my new FG Coupe.
If you plan on autocrossing, fantastic. If not, fantastic.

I don't know about that chief. I tried to put my friend's 15" wheels over my Type-S brakes and they wouldn't fit. They fit on his ITR brake setup easily, but mine got stuck.

Seriously? The Pro Race 1 wheels fit on his DC5R Brembos (barely, as I've seen in pics) but not on your OEM Type-S brakes?
Hmm.........

Here are the pics k20tuRbo over at clubrsx posted of 15" Team Dynamics Pro Race 1 wheels on his Type-S with OEM brakes:

These are among the only 15" rims I've ever heard of that would fit on a Type-S.

I've had as wide as 235's under my EM2, with a little fender rolling and only a little rub at full lock or full compression.
I'd not reccomend 225's on a 6.5" wheel unless you're using R-comps. Most any street tire won't have stiff enough sidewalls to keep the tires from rolling over and doing odd things cornering.

Sure, you can mount a 225/50/16 street tire on the oem 6.5" wheel, but don't expect a crisp-handling car. Overall grip my be better, but transition feel is gonna suck.
A 225/50/16 R compound has a significantly stiffer sidewall than any street tire in the same size. Apples to Oranges.
I put 205/55/16 Azenis RT215's (found someone who still had a new set) on my oem rims and they work OK on the stock rim. I personally wouldn't go any wider with a tire on the OEM rim unless you are after the 'meaty' look.
