Is there a problem with overfilling engine oil?
Don't overfill engine oil. There's a reason it's called overfilling. Yes, it can be detrimental to the health of your engine.
That's about half a quart over. The dealer that I went to did the same thing. I went back and told them that they over filled it and they told me that it was ok and that they always over fill on GSR's and R's. The mechanic told me that there would be NO PROBLEM w/ the oil level being so high. The car does seem to idle a little weird, but it runs fine. I'm gonna go back tomorrow and ask them to drain a little just for piece of mind. If I were you I would just drain the excess oil.
That's about a half litre (half quart) over. That's not a problem. Just ignore it. It'll be fine. Overfilling doesn't get to be a problem until you're a couple of litres over...
Half of a quart over shouldn't hurt anything... They prolly fill GSR's and Type R's higher because VTEC use burns more oil than normal driving... So that is prolly a good thing, that way if you engage VTEC alot you will not be running low on oil when it's time for your next change...
Also maybe when they did you oil change they may have noticed you were lower than you should be, so they put a little more in to compensate for VTEC useage... Just my .02...

a few auto-x guys I have known make it a habit to overfill about 1/2 litre for events, helps keep the levels up while cornering. A 1/2 litre over is not a problem under any condition, problems can occur when you start going a litre over or more though. I wouldn't touch it if you think it is just a 1/2 litre. However, by the sounds of it though , 50% over the top dot sounds like more than a 1/2 litre to me, I may be wrong though, just a guess.
If you race the car, Autox, road racing... I'd fill it to the top dot. Keep an eye on it as the day goes on, if road racing. It is definately possible to burn as much as a qt. road racing with the continuous vtec usage.
Ok, thanks for replies...
To remove the excess oil, is there any other way than to loosen the nut on the sump and hopefully get the right amount out?

GSR's and TYPE R's need 4.2 quarts... i specially designed a starbucks frapachino bottle to take care of the 0.2 qts
You'll start blowin white smoke OH NO! Gaskets true, but this is after a while...god people why not just crucify the guy...geeze. It will change the pressure as well, but just don't do it (over fill). There ARE reason's why there are "specs" in your OM. (Especially considering that the Manual only outlines "user" guidelines). I would HATE to think that there are "USER" ITR drivers out there!
If the dealer did that to your car though, you should really consider listening to GOOD advice on honda-tech (aside from some BS comments here and there) and figure it out...do it yourself and learn.
Fuq the dealers...they will never know your car as well as you do![Modified by 401-2001, 6:56 PM 3/25/2002]
Hehe, funny 'cause I'm asking on behalf of a friend (B16A EK4 not B18C) which asks for about 4.2L according to Helms. Ofcourse he did this by himself, not by the dealer.
I'm just wondering -- how does the oil sit in the bottom of the sump where the dipstick goes in? I'm guessing the dipstick doesn't touch the bottom but merely pokes the top of the oil, so 50% above the upper dot wouldn't mean something like 2L more... but how much would it mean... hmmm
Anyway, thanks for consoling words....
