h22a rebuild, what to upgrade while staying smog "legal"
hey i got an h22a, engine will start, idle for a second, and then cough and die, vacuum hoses are good, im guessing timing belt skipped, engine is 10+ years old anyways and doesnt pass sniffer test and leaks oil and what not like a 10 year old engine does, im planning on a rebuild, everything from piston rings to valve job, what im wondering is what i can upgrade while staying with the p13 ecu and no tuning, i was thinking type s pistons but is it worth it for a .4 comp ratio increase, but what can i upgrade without tuning, ive already got a lightweight flywheel, possibly stage 1 cams, dont want to mess with pullies...
type s pistons and cams wont pass visual, but theyre not going to be able to see them, as long as it stays around stock emissions under 3k rpm which is how high the sniffer test goes, thats all i care about, at least internally

i think if you put in Type S cams, it will change your emissions because the lifts and durations are different.

Thank God for cats!

i dont think the cat help at all...i heard the skunk2 stage 1 is emmission friendly, but other than that, type S piston wont pass smog, maybe thats why the type S motor is not smog legal?????

I've seen a number of guys blow clean with higher compression and bigger cams than the type s. It is possible.

Yes, if the vehicle is tuned for emissions and not for performance. When dynotuned for emissions, the injectors, plugs and ECU parameters are completely different.

it's not like you can put stage 3 cams, have fully built head, and expect a cat to save you from smog emissions. hell, if that was the case, why would we need a smog check, when you can just buy a cat...

so are you a california smogger or a performance shop that tunes fully built engines to emission standards?

If it is your daily driver, just rebuild all stock, thats what i did on my lude and it ran great...........Untill i wrecked it.

Please email me. It takes 2-3 hours to dynotune a car for emissions purposes.

Emissions and performance are two different extremes. Emissions friendly vehicles don't have good performance. And, performance vehicles have bad emissions. You can't have both. It's a trade-off, either give up on performance vehicles and buy yourself a Toyota Prius hybrid, or build yourself a horsepower monster and just deal with it.

pm'ed u.. i'm working on doing a h22a swap on my 3rd gen 1991 prelude.. what is required to pass visual test.. and do i have to use the p13 ecu? whats involved in ur end with dyno tuning? i already have a p72 ecu chipped with uberdata. pls let me kno contact info so i can get more information from u.
also would the emissions matter if my block has been resleeved with golden eagle sleeves but at stock bore 89mm and plan on using stock pistons etc.. so i can pass
Ok well I have type-s pistons, crower 2 cams, uhhh what else, an exhaust system which includes a hi flow cat and I pass emmisions no problem, actually twice now since my rebuild. Granted my car is tuned with hondata so Im not sure how the mods like s pistons would go mated with a stock ecu? FYI type s pistons will give u a full pt in compression not .4 . I think when you rebuild (if its with type-s pistons) you really should get a tuned ecu, hondata or whatever. I think you would enjoy having a properly tuned car. If not just rebuild with stock parts and use genuine honda rings, in my opinion the best. Also watch for proper honing methods (very important).
