I was quoted $1300 for a valve job! Just get a new head?
I took my 91 hatchback in to get an inspections of most parts, and the number 2 cylinder isn't working. The mechanic said the valves are screwing up or sumthing and I need a valve job. He said to do everything to get it working would be $1300 dollars. Considering I only paid $1100 for it, that is out of the question. The engine is a D15B1 (stock for a 91 civic std.). Can I just replace the head instead of doing all that ****? Will that solve it?
Yes. Considering non v-tec d-series motors run for 100-300$ you might as well throw a new motor with less miles in there

Time for an engine swap. Swap something into that beast! I payed $500 for 130HP. You can easily find some good engines for around that.

My budget is only $300. I don't wanna do a whole "upgrade swap". Maybe a nice motor on-line would be nice. I checked H-motors but they only had like VTEC d-series. I just want a nice stock replacement. Any places?

give me the phone number to this guys shop. I want to ask him to give me a quote so that I can laugh at him when he tells me an outrageous price.

That is pretty ridiculous but basically you would be paying for the labor and the use of machinery. To us that seems ridiculous because we could get a whole new engine or at least a d16a6 for a lot less than that but a shop charges that much probably on an average head rebuild, not just his Honda. The time and money can easily add up when going rates are $65-$80/hour for labor. In your case it wouldnt be worth it to rebuild that head when you could upgrade or get the same engine for less.

I have a 91 crx si, with a b16a1 swap I bought it had lots of problems and issues. After getting in deeper inside the motor I found cylinders 1 and 4 scoured so I got a block with 80k on it from a friend to replace. The head had major problems as well the valve seats and seals were totally gone creating valve play, and again cylinders 1 and 4 on the head really gummed up with tar. I only paid 466 I supplied the valve seals, now its all resurfaced cleaned up and re done never pay much more then this for head work I was almost hesitant on paying it because a b16a1 swap is only 800 dollars Im just impatient with my project right now haha.

$300+ for a JDM ZC SOHC motor. I remember ripping through the gears in a EF hatch once with a ZC I will admit the sucker flew!
I paid 100$ for a complete SOHC ZC engine with mounts/shift linkage/starter. Only thing I needed was a dizzy and I got one for 25$ off a scrapped engine. I had a head, complete minus dizzy for a D16A6. Willing to clean it up and ship it off for cheap.
