Default Final Drive Gear

Ok here is the thing. My bro is a technician for honda, and him and his technician racer friend say that the transmission on the 04 ep3 and the 03 dc5 are the same and that i could have a sixth gear on my ep if i purchase a final drive gear from honda. six speed ep3. i want to know if anyone has heard of this being done. i am about a week away from ordering it so input would be nice.

The parts can be exchanged, but the ratio of the final drives are different between any EP Si and the 02-04 RSX's. The 05-06 RSX's, however, have the same FD as the EP, and so does the '06+ Si.

Oh, but here's another thing to think about (which I almost forgot to mention)...

The EP's 5th gear and the RSX-S 6th gear are the same ratio. You will not gain any top speed or improve highway fuel economy or gain acceleration by merely adding a sixth gear.

The FG2 Si's sixth gear, though, is a bit taller. It's actually the same ratio as the TSX's sixth gear.

If you're going to change parts around to make a 6-speed without swapping in a transmission, you really should change the other gears as well.

Understand that this can be great if you happen upon an RSX tranny with a slightly damaged casing, worn syncros, or whatever. If the internals are still good, you can put them into your EP's transmission case.

sweet, so to gain any performance i have to swap out everything. more money than i wanted to spend. You can't just redo the gear ratios? I'm sure that would solve it or just get the gear out of a tsx.

You could swap out gearing parts and stuff. I don't know all the specifics, though, like what part numbers, etc. Honda Tuning had an article last fall on exactly this procedure. I'll bet you can find more info on k20.org, too (lots of swap information floating around in there).

Thought I'd add that Honda Tuning said that the cost of the necessary new internal parts came out to about the same as a complete used 6-speed transmission.

I'm still keeping it in mind as a possibility.

Yeah that's what he said. Wellit's still only a possibility. I want to be able to max out higher than 135 though. Any ideas?

Higher than 135? Why? Do you have a stretch of speed-unlimited highway out there that we haven't heard about?

If you want a higher top speed, use the 4.388 FD from an 02-04 RSX. Understand that acceleration will suffer a bit, though.
