swap ignition/door handles/hatch or trunk keyhole... shouldnt be to hard to get em new or if you can find them used with a key. i may be wrong, never done it before.

Can't you just go to the dealership with your VIN and proof of ownership and get a new key cut?

I would just get all new locks. You can attempt to get a key from the dealership but my brother in law just lost the keys to his car and they cut him one but the tumbler were so worn the key didn't work.

Actually when i went to the stealership b.c the lady at meijers fucked it up they didnt even take my key they have a database of all vin numbers and that particular key for that car with that vin #, i was really impressed considering my car is an 88. Kinda scary in a way but then again every day is becoming more and more of a big brother society......But say i buy it on the spot I cant leave it sitting I have to get it outa there so im thinkin to just get under the dash and remove the lock body then usea screw driver ot flip the switch. Or just usea a toe bar and get it home then deal with it.

Any idea how much this costs?

I am in a similar situation. I bought a 90 Civic and the guy that sold it to me only had one key. And the key he gave me doesn't work very well. It only fits in one way and only works in the driver's door and the ignition.

I need to get a few keys that fit everything.

Will the dealership have them for my car? Is it cheaper than having a locksmith make them for me?

I lost the keys to my '97 civic, went to the dealership with the Registration and a Driver's liscense, they cut a brand new key from the VIN for $8 bux. Good price IMO

My friend bought a Mazda from an auction, the key only worked in the ignition. So we went to a junkyard and got a full set of locks and took them to a local locksmith, for 10 bucks he got a new set of keys and we installed the new cylinders. Go to the car, take the cylinder and have a locksmith make you a key, go back and drive it home.

just give your dealer the VIN and a copy of the bill of sale and they will cut you a key. my dealer charges only for the cost of the keyblank itself ($2.xx) and even then I have a buddy in parts who will just hook it up for free.

when I got my car I got one key, and it had prolly been copied like 5 times so it didn't work like at all. I went to the dealership with ID and registration and they cut me a new one for $3. Works like its brand new.

I went to the dealership with my title and ID today and got a few keys made.

It only took them a few minutes and the keys fit perfectly!

And, they only cost me $1.40 each. I bought three for less than $5!

I'm so glad that I found this thread or else I would have paid a locksmith an arm and a leg to make them for me!

I had to open up the ignition on the car i just bought the the other day, and start it with a screw driver. but the steering wheel will lock, or will remain locked. I just called al locksmith and he made me a key by just feel and fileing the new key down, it only works for the ignition, but it got me home so i could go to the dealership and they could get a key made for me. I work at a dealership, all they do is get your registration and proof of ownership and use the VIN to get a key code in the computer, and then they use the key code in a big book and find the numbers. Its like say 1 2 3 3 4 3 2 or somthing like that. and thats how they cut the key. the numbers are how deep the key gets cut. some techs can just tell the code by just looking at the key.

You can take out the lock cylinder on the door or trunk and it's got several #s on it (4 i think) and take them to a lock smith along with the year/make/model and they can cut a key.
