Timing Belt repl 90 Accord
Does anyone know a ballpark figure for replacing the timing belt on a '90 Accord? The repair place I usually take my car, a national chain, quotes about $800. A friend has told me that a friend of his who owns a garage will do it for $250. One one hand, I don't want to get ripped off by the major chain; but on the other I'm afraid that the independent is charging is so little because he might not do the best job. Anyone have any thoughts or advice?
I'd be equally scared of both estimates. Depending on garage, I'd expect anywhere between $450.00 and $600.00 for an estimate which includes.
Camshaft timing belt
Counterbalance Drive Belt
Timing Belt Tensioner
Camshaft Front seal
Crankshaft Front Seal
Counterbalance shaft seal
Water Pump
---and the Associated Labor for Job.
I would accept no less extensive a job (I hate revisiting things)

I would recomend that you buy Honda parts instead of what you have listed and pay your mechanic the $125 to install them. It's not a deal if the parts don't last.
This guys an angel if he's only charging you two hours labor. I would suggest that you discuss with him about a revised estimate based on the suggested parts list I suggested earlier.
If they haven't been addressed earlier, replace those 16 year old seals as well. Now is not the time to go cheap.
