Default Quick Questions...LSD tranny

For my brothers 94 gsr. He is buying a used JDM GSR tranny w/LSD and we know to look through the axle hole to make sure it has the LSD. Is there anyway to tell what kind of LSD is in the transmission by looking at it through the axle holes? We dont want to get screwed with an OBX or Phantom grip and prefer an OEM one.

Also, Is there anyway to test if the LSD is good or bad without having to install if first? (Any simple tests to perform when we are picking up the tranny?)

besides looking through the hole, the only other way is to open up the tranny and look directly at the LSD.

People lie.

Best bet would be to take it apart. If not install it as soon as possible and if it sucks tell the seller.

Yup, Ive been lied to before on parts.

I think we will take it apart and check it. Actually, that would be best, as we can check the condition of the synchros and what not.

My 1994 helms manual does not have any info on the LSD though, Could someone let us know what to check on the LSD? Clearances and all the good stuff?

We really dont want to install it to test and than find out the tranny is bad; The garage were working in is a small one car garage. Our backs are literally up against the walls when taking of the wheel/axle nut, etc...I have to take off the extension handle on our floor jack cause it hits the walls. Our plan is to just do it once.

Its a LSD gsr transmission we are buying. Supposedly a new shipment direct from Japan.

If someone put an OBX or Phantom grip LSD into it:
1. What was wrong with the factory LSD that it came with?
2. Why are they downgrading the LSD instead of upgrading if they were replacing the factory unit?
3. Do they sell OBX or Phantom grip in Japan?, if not, the tranny didnt just come from Japan.

If anyone knows how to test the LSD (without being installed on the car), I would really appreciate it, Ive spent a couple of hours already searching the internet and could not any info.

without opening it... good luck. there's no way to find out, but you can check the bell for cracks and such.

check out http://www.kaaz-usa.com, you can give them a call and they can tell you exaclty what to look for.
is the lsd helical or clutch type.....???? some trannys after a lsd is installed have a small sticker over the stock mark that tells you what is in it. but i would break it open and look at everything before the purchase.
