Acceleration "stutter" issue on 89 STD HB
Hey Folks,
I've been searching like crazy on these boards and I think I've isolated part of the problem down but I think I could use some help on the rest. Here's the deal; I've got a 89 std HB (4 spd/1.5L/DPFI) with 170k on it. I went out an bought a full exhaust (header/cat/catback) and a CAI off of ebay for a little extra punch out of this engine (hey; every little bit helps!!). well; it seemed to be all good until one day I was driving on the interstate in the rain and it was coming down pretty heavy; upon exiting the highway; it immediately noticed that the car was "stuttering" as if it had pulled some water into the intake. I'm not sure what happened. I added moisture remover to my gas and that seems to fix things a bit. But since that time the car hasn't been working right. when I accellerate I can only gradually press down the pedal until I reach about 3k then I can fully press it down. I know that when I climb hills in 2nd gear it does the sputtering thing as well. My mechanic says that the engine is getting too much air due to the CAI; so I swapped it back to stock; but no change. I've also got oil on the threads of my plugs so I've seen (via searching) that if I get a valve cover gasket set it should fix the plug/thread/oil issue. *HOPE*HOPE*
I'm looking at getting a CRX here shortly; so I'm excited about that. But I would like to try to sell my HB to offset the cost of the CRX; but I want to sell it in a reliable condition. If anyone has any ideas as to what might be causing the studder; I'm all ears.
thanks in advance!!
Greg

oh also; I replaced the o2 sensor on the header when I did the exhaust upgrade; the dizzy has also been replaced. I was thinking about replacing the wires but I'm not really sure if that's the right direction to go...
are you getting any codes just for ***** and giggles check the ecu and see if the little red led light is flashing
p.s. thats why i dont like cai's suck up alot of dirt and moisture not worth the little bit of colder air it sucks in... i think a intake manifold heat shield gasket is your better bet but if you wanna help prevent this in the future you can add a aem cai bypass valve, ebay has them pretty cheap

I haven't checked the ECU; but I will. I have since converted to a short-ram intake and it seems to be treating me better. however; still got the damn stuttering problem; bleh.
