PnP worht it?
I am have a stock JDM h22a. Well about 3 months ago, the cam jumped a tooth and bent quite a few valves. Well I have an option to buy a new head with all new components. It has been PnP'ed pretty much as much aluminum as you can have done, it was done by a top shop.
This comes with everything needed buy the IM. He wants $700+shipping.
is it worth it. what kind of gains should I expect. Also later on(few months) I am going to turbo it, something like 8psi tops.
thanks

Porting and polishing is of great use to an engine built for N/A use. The idea being to modify the head, the valves and the intake and exhaust runners as to make it easier to process more air/fuel. (Improve pumping efficiency). The anticipated Horsepower increases from PnP work are 'fluid' in that it has just as much to do with just how bad the design (or attention to detail) of the original head casting was, as any upgraded components are added (Larger valves). Most power outputs will be mid rpm and higher ranges, most likely ranging from 25 to 40 hp.
PnP should also help with regards (won't hurt*) a turbo installation. Any improvement to pumping efficiency will begat more HP.
* with the exception of radical camshaft grinds. Long duration camshafts do not lend themselves to Turbo installations (boost goes out exhaust b'cuz valves are held open too long.

unless you put in bigger valves, it won't do much in terms of performance. If you put in bigger valves you need different pistons as the larger valves will strike them.
So I should just buy a stock head, I know it flow better, and I understand the reason for it. Just not sure it worth paying $300 more.
Also its still stock valves, so will work on my stock block. My thoughts on this is that it doesn't change much, as you stated unless the valves are increase.

well since the Honda head flows pretty well in the first place, I would guess <10hp. The head needs bigger valve to make any gains in power but bigger vales = new pistons
I agree. If your ultimate goal is to go boost, save the additional $400. (install an OEM head) and put the money you saved into a correct Engine management system when it comes time for the turbo.
Considering our little Japanese watches pump out over 1hp / Cu-in in (stock), they're doing alright for themselves.
The OEM head in stock trim will be more than satisfactory for what you want.

So not worth it, I will be getting a controller and all that, anyways, but not thinking about money, would this have a big effect when I boost or only like 5hp.
thanks
