b16 tranny on LS- what mph does it top out?
I have an ls turbo with a stock redline and a stock ls tranny. I am planning on putting a b16 tranny in before I raise my redline with valve springs and retainers, but I was thinking: the b16 tranny will probably top out my ls at about 120, right. However, my mph in the quarter mile RIGHT NOW is 120. so does that mean that i will go through all gears in the b16 tranny until it tops out??
thanks in advance...

Alex, some of that will depend on slick size, and redline. I think you will like the b16 alot better!

take a look at this website and you can plug in your slick size as well as match it up with different trannies and find out which would be better for your setup.

It's a little bit off for me. I plugged the #s and it said i should trap 143mph redline to 9000rpm. but i trapped 140mph and not even close to my redline.
There's alot of other factors. Wind, slope of the track, aero-dynamics of the vehicle, etc... That site is simply mechanical. Good stuff tho.

I'm guessing you have a stock redline???

I like my LS tranny, anything tighter and you would need large slicks meaning more chance of breakin something. And you will need to revv it higher depending on tire size.
my GSr tranny was hittin the 5th gear rev limit w/ only a 110 trap on a set of 20 inch MT slicks. (stock ls 7100ish redline)
also, with my LST setup, I revved to 7500 and still ran out of 4th gear before the end. On an LS tranny. 11.58 @ 121 on 22x8x13 slicks
Im using my LS tranny also on my LSvtec now. I'm revving to 8500 and ran out of gear in 4th with 21" diameter BFG's. 11.50 @ 125.
I love the ls tranny

when shifting at 8500, what rpm do you drop back into gear at? fall out of vtec? im in the process of selling my gsr trans and moving to the ls for my lsvtec. i kinda hated having to go into 5th at like 115mph. last week i was racing my friends s4, and he was just shifting into 4th and i was getting into 5th. id like to get more mph out of my 4th gear
streetrage: the gsr tranny was just about perfect for my 225-240hp ls. as the power went up, the gears went by faster, and it started to suck. im gonna go on a limb here and say that for anything over like 300ish whp, stick with an ls tranny, especially if you have lots of highways around

Yea, me too.
However, I really do not EVER feel the need to EVER go that fast on the street.
BUT, if it is for the track, good luck

I believe i could shift at 7,000 and still be in vtec.
my motor is making 330+whp from 5200 to 8500 on 10psi. You have to remember, im making peak TQ from 5200 flat to 8,000.
LS tranny is perfect IMO for higher HP cars.

i agree completely. as my setups have been making more and more power, ive concluded this.
i do have to say however its fun to be banging gears all the time when driving, as found on a shorter geared tranny
