Default need some ideas on what is causing my 3rd gear grind

well heres my set up. 88 crx si with a b16a2 26,000 miles with a ys1 trans 70,000 miles. i have a hasport shift likage and im running the original clutch and i have a short shifter. now for the problem. like once a week ill go to put it in 3rd and it will just grind in, it goes in smoothly except for the annoying noise. my clutch is old and i believe its on its way out and i believe my input shaft bearing on my trans is done aswell being that i can here it whining as i drive. but i have been told by others that its my throw out bearing. could this mysterious once in a week or so grind be from one of these bad parts or is my tranny on its way out aswell?

I suggest getting rid of that short shifter and finding a nice stock shifter or a non-short aftermarket, for obvious reasons.

Most likely a bad syncro. My 4 speed grinds when I put it into third, such as yours, and it does not do it all the time, again such as yours.

replacing the shifter wont do much...the only thing that a short shifter does that is bad for the tranny is it doesnt give the tranny enough time to speed up the next gear before engagement....the damage isnt "that" much more than ripping threw gears with a stock one....just dont shift as hard into that gear and definately change the fluid

two plugs on the right side of the tranny if you take off the passenger tire and look around where the axle is you cant miss them... 2 of them one on bottom for draining one on top for filling... drain it put plug back in the bottom plug take out top plug.. go to local chevy dealer buy 2 or 3 quarts of gm syncromsh FM (friction modified... ive heard a couple people say you need 3 quarts but i personaly only needed 2... and reach deep in your pockets the gm fm syncromesh is pretty pricey) and fill through top hole untill fluid starts running out put plug back in and tire on and drive and pray it works

Same thing as the D series, all honda manuals are the same!

Syncromesh the **** out of your tranny cause you got a fucked up synchro. Trust me, they DON'T grind all the time, case my H22 tranny grinds 3rd and 5th every 10-15 shifts.

if it was the input shaft bearing you would know it it would be a different kind of gring kinda like a howel when your foot isitn on the clutch than when you push down on the clutch (assuming your throwout bearing is ok) it would quiet down

i would say try flushing it and filling with synchro mesh... if it still does it rebuild the tranny or buy a new one

why would the imput shaft bearing cause it to grind? it's just turning... (i don't mean to be rude and don't want to sound like an ***, i just had to sit an hour and explain to a kid how a bad clutch will not cause a tranny to grind unless it's dragging. and obviously a bad clutch doesn't drag)
