Default 88-89/90-91 Cluster Question

I'm looking to pick up a JDM or UKDM gauge cluster, and I was wondering...will a 90-91 JDM/UKDM gauge cluster work in a CDM/USDM 89' Civic hatchback Si? If so, could anyone link me or post up the wiring diagrams? Searched, and all I could find were writeups/threads on 90-91's.

Thanks!

Thanks, already knew that...but assuming that I get a newer Civic VSS and the appropriate connectors, would a 90-91 JDM SiR cluster work in my 89' CDM HB?

ya, wont just plug in tho, you need to wire in the Sir cluster plugs.

I think you might also have to split the vss signal to go to two locations. 1. the cluster 2. the ecu.

search for "sir cluster"

Yeah, I have, and it seems to be the same for the 90-91's...plugging into the ECU that is. So it'll work on my 89' Civic Si hatchback?! Just a final verification before I drop the money on one .

Possibly if you still have it in a week or two. Really just looking to see what's out there right now.

My wtb thread: https://honda-tech.com/zeropost...04600

The EDM cluster uses the cable driven VSS, right?

I don't know if this will help but here goes...

I purchased a 90 EDM cluster for my 90 CRX Si and instead of rewiring everything I took the guts out of the EDM cluster and put it into the USDM cluster. Turned my car on and everythign works like a charm.

I'm sure the same thing would apply to you if you did the same thing. Well at least I would hope so

Thanks, I'll keep that in mind. I'm leaning more towards the JDM SiR cluster look though...centered speedo, tach to the left, and everything else to the right. I just can't seem to get used to the "older styled" clusters we have in our Civic's/CRX's...I'll admit that the centered temp gauge is safer though.

To answer your questions 88-89 clusters work best in 88-89 crx's. 90-91 clusters work best in 90-91 crx's. The hood shapes are different - 90-91 is more rounded so you'll need that if you want to run a 90-91 in your 88-89. Don't quote me on this but I believe some of the pinouts are different between the two cluster generations as well.

EDM clusters use a cable VSS. JDM sir clusters use an electronic VSS. I just installed a JDM sir cluster in my car yesterday (I just have to finalize the connections now) and it was probably a lot more work than a UKDM would have been. I like it a lot better though.

Good luck with your cluster search.
