Default Noise Behind Gauges

Sup ...I have an 88 crx dx... I have a some bolt on mods done to the stock setup, but nothing major as its my daily driver/ project for work.... aside from that, im doing the typical b16 swap this summer... moving on...

for a week now i have been getting this high pitched oscillating squeeking and crackling from behind the gauges... i know its not my belts and the sound gets louder and more annoying the faster i drive... ... i thought it had to do with the cold weather, but even in nice weather it makes the noise. any ideas what it may be and or how to fix this? thanks...

Sounds like that one cable behind the cluster. May need to grease the cable or replace your cluster. Forgot the technical name for it though, having a brain fart.

hmmm... so what ur saying is maybe some sort of "gears" or the actual speedo cable or what have u within the cluster itself are just not lubbed or whatever?

the speedo cable looked ok when i popped the cluster out the other day... i even ran my car up on jack stands and it made the noise... i have no clue what it is and neither does my honda gearhead friend.... if u think of what ur brain farting on lemme know... thanks

Could be, I know someone who got a nice car really really cheap because of the "old car cluster squeal." All he did was replace the cluster and it was fine. Maybe some other HT members can chime in on this subject.

it could be the speedometer cable. the cable goes from the transmission to the speedometer and turns faster as the car moves faster. maybe the cable needs replacing or maybe it just needs some lube on the end where it meets the speedometer..

I have a bad speedo cable and it does that squeak. The faster I go the worse it gets.

pull the speedo cable off from the back of the guage cluster. squirt some wd40 in there. apply some grease where you can. that should do it. plug it back in.
