Basically, with all the sportsman cars getting caged up and legal for the updated tech inspection rules, these cars are getting fatter and fatter price tags. With this in mind, I'm wondering a couple things about the rest of you competitive or fairly competitive sportsman people.
1) Do you REALLY drive your cars on the street? I'm not just talking about the occasional "around-the-block" test drive. I'm talking about taking it out and about to actually enjoy the monster somewhere besides the track. Maybe even drive it to the track...?
2) How many of you own/run shops? If so, is your car a "shop car" (i.e., a drag car that you've built to run in the less-expensive classes), or more along the lines of a personal playtoy? More of a "grassroots racer"?
- Personally, I'm finding it more and more difficult to want to take the thing out on a regular basis, simply because I don't want to lose the thing to some stupid idiot driver who isn't paying attention. There's no possible way that a insurance company will cover the entire investment
But, I can't invest all this money in the damn thing just to let it collect dust until race day
I love to take it out for a cruise. I never street race, but its still fun to be able to go out for the occasional spirited drive. I don't personally own a toe vechile or trailer and my local track is 85 miles from my house, so I load up the back with tools, slicks and the occasional spare axle and its off to run. AAA = godsent.
Anyone else?

my car was a daily driver up until last year. every single friday night i would drive it to the track run 11.6 each and every single pass. i'd bring tools...change my slicks when i got there..and brought spare axles. never broke an axle somehow that year either. same axles i used all this year. got them from the junk yard....oem honda axles. very last pass of the year i went 11.40, i was happy
this year i drove my car around a little bit when my audi was down.....its no fun on the street. i couldnt get the car to make any less than 550whp and all it would do is spin. most importantly i didnt want to risk breaking it being stupid on the street...i have more fun traveling and following the events.
i do own a shop, however i do not put a single dollar of shop money into my car. my whole car was built of used parts other than my clutch and turbo last year. i do any and all the fab work i possibly can myself. if i didnt run a shop, i'd have more time and money to play with my stupid car haha.
realistically if you want to be competitive you need to choose if you want a street car or a race car. if you try to make 1 car do both...its going to suck at both.

My car used to be daily driven untill i got sent to the smog ref. Unfortunately for us cali. racers, its alot harder than other states to actualy drive a car like these daily because of the laws out here. When i got sent to the ref. i wasnt doing anything wrong, and i was pulled over and told to pop my hood. then i was written a ticket to have the car inspected. after that happened i stopped driving the car so much. I bought another car to drive around now, just not worth the headaches...
Now if i lived in another state where the laws wernt so strict, i would continue to drive the car daily.

I use to daily drive my car around but it got old putting c16 in all the time..I ran pump gas for awhile on low boost but i really just don't like being edgy with that much of and investment..but i drive my car 30 miles to the local track with slicks and tools in the back so i know what your saying, but its all a personal preference i guess...I enjoy just cruising around in my car i dont really have to be raising all kinds of hell..I also enjoy trailering it to events and competing, so the investment pays off for me because it enjoyable in both aspects...
i used to drive mine on the street as well, gave that up when i narrowly avoided being pulled over for drag racing. a quick u turn and an on ramp to the freeway and i was out of there, poor cop never had a chance
i have a clean driving record and decided i want to keep it that way
no more fast street cars for me!
(sorry steve, he wasnt going to get both of us haha)

i daily drove my ek last year (60-80 miles a day). and once i get it back together with the new 2006 specs, it'll still be my daily driver. i may pick up another vehicle for daily driving, but it'll be due to fuel economy issues $$$ and not because of any of the other reasons mentioned.
i have a 92 eg... built gsr turbo with about 25000 miles on it... i have the c16 tune and the 93 tune... i have driven my car from Ny to miami and also have made 5+ trips from orlando to miami as well as this car being a dily driver... car actually hasent been to the track in the last 1000 miles... also the car is capable of hitting low 11's on pump gas and DR and high tens on slicks... as long as the engine is built rite and you have a somewhat conserv street tune... the car will be fine...
I used to drive my car a lot on the street but the way it is now it is getting to be a little loud with the 3.5-4inch exhaust systems and external pumps, rollcages and no music. I will still drive it around on the street a couple days before a huge race to make sure it drives ok. If it drives perfect on the street then i should be good on the track. Another thing I hate is when you go to a race and you have all the contingency stickers all over the car when you get back home, you get the strangest looks driving around, people think you are crazy. lol I hate taking off all those stickers
I am building a new street car that will be a DAILY driven 11.50 car with AC, power steering, tint, a nice stereo setup and a WALBRO. lol. should be fun

I would love to drive my car everyday but reality is that it would get ganked the first day. I been car jacked at a gun point in a bright gas station. I would never drive my car without a gun anymore. now when my car is done again, I will only drive it on nice days or with bunch of people to be safe and that will prevent me from going to jail cause I killed someone who tried to jack me again.

I used to drive mine on the street all the time, but I almost got busted for street racing and they started to pull people over alot in my area so I stopped driving it on the street.
I love taking it out for "spirited driving"!
Not as often as I would like though...

1. I drove mine 70 miles today. Drove to work, went out for lunch, picked up 3 friends after work, went to the strippers, dropped said friends off at home, then picked me wife up from work and gave her a ride home. I like to drive my car to work a couple days a week, and it's what I use for main transportation on the weekend.
2. Definitely don't own a shop.
I didn't build mine to be a race car, just a fast-*** street car and I didn't make any sacrifices in that respect. Still have power steering, still have a nice stereo, still have back seats, still have a comfy ride. Not as extreme as some people's rides, but I have a lot of fun with it

I won Power Street in my Galant Vr-4 in St. Louis 2005. I drive that bastard every single day. Its best pass to date is 11.29 at 123. I'm currently switching from a stock head to a built and ported one, and changing the GT35 to a 35R. It should make another 125 whp and easily be in the high 10 sec range. I work at our shop but I'm not an owner.
Dan Bajalis's White Evo (one of our good friends and customer) won Power Street at Norwalk and finished runner up to me at St. Louis. His best pass is 10.3 at 139. He has an Evo 9 RS that he drives daily but he takes his white 03 out quite often.
Our shop Evo is much more of a purpose built car, although it does see quite a bit of street use. We drove it 200+ miles to the Factory M.O.D. event in Normal, IL a few months ago, drove it around on the streets of Chicago to make some videos, and we will be driving it downtown to the McCormick center Friday to put it in NOPI's booth at the World of Wheels car show. The parachute on the highway gets quite a few stares!

I wish i could drive my car on the street. i did take the car for a spin around the block over the summer and wasnt on the road 1 min. and i got pulled over. I was threatened by the cop that pulled me over that he was going to impound my car because its not legal. The only way I was able to avoid that was the cop that showed up for his back up was a friend of mine.

I refuse to build an all out race car for the simple fact I wanna drive it for more then 8 seconds or so at a time once a month.
I agree it is hard to have both to do well at both. But it is what it is.
**** Id drive a Fiber bodied, tube chassis, lexaned car on the streets if I had one. Id find a way to do it.lol
IMO no sense in having a street car you cant drive on the streets or wont cuz you want it to be a race car. Street cars should be just that IMO.
