Default 2nd gear poping out

y does second keepin poping out of gear? Only seems to happen when I'm down shifting from 3rd, and car is around 2500 or so...I could be goin around 40 or so in second gear, and let off the gas, and then it will just slip out... everytime!!! cincro's are ok, cuz i can shift in and out of 2nd fine, just not stayin in when i let off gas. thanks

Ouch.... I have a skunk2 short shifter, but thats been on for awhile, and this just started a few months ago, so I didn't think it had anything to do with that...

How many miles are on the tranny fluid? Are there leaks anywhere?

sometimes this problem is caused by engine mounts being worn, and the movement of the motor will cause the shifter linkage to pop the gear out

You don't need a new trans, don't let the ignorant stupidity of most of the people on this site scare you. Detents keep the car in gear. Your shift detent for 2nd gear is going bad. It is a cheap part, and some one with a general knowledge of transmission operation should not have much of a problem replacing it.

Also what was posted just above is another cause, as well as damaged shift linkage.

i'm gonna take a wild guess here and guess that you have a 96-00 civic. those transmissions have steel shift forks that everyone thinks are strong. they are very thin and are bent in your transmission. it's not the detents. i have had 2 y8 trannies so far both with 2nd gear's that would pop out. after a while it got so bad that both trannies wouldn't even go into 2nd gear at all. i mean they would go in but as soon as ilet my foot off the clutch they would pop right back out. i replaced the shift fork and still use the same gearsets and they still work fine till this day.

here's a pick i took of my old bent shift fork.

my 5th gear always did that and it was because i had a tranny leak and had little tranny fluid. did you check the fluid?

i had this problem. it started as 2nd poppin out then turned into poppin out and grinding like it was its job. so i didnt use 2nd for awhile while i was lookin for aonther y8 tranny. mysteriously one day i put it into 2nd to see if it was still grindin and it worked fine. that was about 4 months ago. now the problem has resurfaced. i plan on buyin a new clutch anyway. should i just scrap this tranny and go out and buy another one? or just check the detents. and other minor things?

Detents prolly dont have the right amount of pressure on them or it could be a shift fork.....check your **** linkage too...

Naw, no grinding at all... just likes to pop out when i let off the gas. And fluid level is fine, i just changed it. thanks for all the info guys, I'll check it out. I don't think I'll spend the money the get a new tranny or to repiar it...I'll just ride it out as long as it will hold, cuz I'm swaping to a OBDII b18c1 in the spring
