2nd gear poping out
y does second keepin poping out of gear? Only seems to happen when I'm down shifting from 3rd, and car is around 2500 or so...I could be goin around 40 or so in second gear, and let off the gas, and then it will just slip out... everytime!!! cincro's are ok, cuz i can shift in and out of 2nd fine, just not stayin in when i let off gas. thanks
Ouch.... I have a skunk2 short shifter, but thats been on for awhile, and this just started a few months ago, so I didn't think it had anything to do with that...
mine did the same then as i was swaping the tranny i noticed a screw was off with a spring lowed ball in it that i heard made it stay in second ....a buddy of mine said that what it was that made it keep going out of 2nd when i let off the gass and it make a grinding and poping noise when i let off the gas
only about 3k on the fluid, just had it changed cuz i thought it would help...it didn't...although my car was happier
...i was just talking to my padre and he said the samething u did about the "thingy" that keeps it in second gear might be broken.. anyone know a lil more about this and how much I'm lookin at to get it fixed? or a DIY thred?

my 3rd pops out once in a while especially when i'm at around 3k in heavy traffic...it pops and then grinds...my cousins 2nd gear did the same and after a couple weeks he couldn't even put into 2nd gear...both of us have 99 civic ex's..

i hope your ready to do a tranny swap in near future
this exact thing happened to me and it got so bad eventually that it wouldnt evengo into 2nd anymore. u know how shitty it is to drive a y7 with only 1st and 3rd gear to move? haha

You don't need a new trans, don't let the ignorant stupidity of most of the people on this site scare you. Detents keep the car in gear. Your shift detent for 2nd gear is going bad. It is a cheap part, and some one with a general knowledge of transmission operation should not have much of a problem replacing it.
Also what was posted just above is another cause, as well as damaged shift linkage.

i'm gonna take a wild guess here and guess that you have a 96-00 civic. those transmissions have steel shift forks that everyone thinks are strong. they are very thin and are bent in your transmission. it's not the detents. i have had 2 y8 trannies so far both with 2nd gear's that would pop out. after a while it got so bad that both trannies wouldn't even go into 2nd gear at all. i mean they would go in but as soon as ilet my foot off the clutch they would pop right back out. i replaced the shift fork and still use the same gearsets and they still work fine till this day.
here's a pick i took of my old bent shift fork.

i had this problem. it started as 2nd poppin out then turned into poppin out and grinding like it was its job. so i didnt use 2nd for awhile while i was lookin for aonther y8 tranny. mysteriously one day i put it into 2nd to see if it was still grindin and it worked fine. that was about 4 months ago. now the problem has resurfaced. i plan on buyin a new clutch anyway. should i just scrap this tranny and go out and buy another one? or just check the detents. and other minor things?
It means ur tanny is ******* up on you mite as wheel just start saving up for a new tranny. does your gear grind when u put it in? mine did the same thing in my accord then i lost the gear completly about 1 mouth lata.
Naw, no grinding at all... just likes to pop out when i let off the gas. And fluid level is fine, i just changed it. thanks for all the info guys, I'll check it out. I don't think I'll spend the money the get a new tranny or to repiar it...I'll just ride it out as long as it will hold, cuz I'm swaping to a OBDII b18c1 in the spring
