Default CRX Si instrument cluster

How many different clusters were made for the 89 CRX Si? I have been looking for a replacement but the one in my son's car doesn't look like the one in the helms manual or what I have seen on line. His cluster has an extra plastic "box" attached to the back with a blue plug. Can anyone tell me what I need to look for in a replacement? I have tried taking pieces from other clusters, but things seem to be getting worse. At first the gas gauge didn't work and the sending unit tested ok, now gas, temp gauges don't work. Please offer suggestions!

My son needs a good cluster surely someone out there has one he can afford!!!

they are all plug and play between 88-89 Si/Dx/HF. There were two different "brands" of cluster's used in those years but they are swappable in whole. If you try to mix and match cluster components you will run into trouble.

So long as it's squarish (88-89 are all squarish) they it should bolt right in.

thats a seperate piece that attaches to it...most likely if you got it from someone they screwed ya over...it should be on the back with a clear housing to it...if not go get one at local junkyard

There are 2 clusters for the EF. There is the 88-89 model and the 90-91 model. Both year models have 2 clusters, one with the a Tachometer, and one without. Now, if you have some money you can import a tach, one with a higher redline for a ZC engine, and one for a VTEC engine from the VTi (EDM, has 240kmh and 9000rpm tach) or the SIR (JDM, 180kmh and 9000rpm tach).

That's about it for plug and play. People have fit 96-00 EG clusters, 90-93 DA clusters too.

true but with some corrections..

yes, 88-89 came with and without a tach. BUT I have had two clusters (both squarish 88-89) and the BOTH had a tach same redline, 6500rpm. They are made by two seperate companies and had the same plugs. However, the guts were different.

That box is for the seatbelt system in the car. IIRC, its not a HUGE deal if it is not there, its more to allow the system to beep angrily at you when you exceed a speed threshold without the seatbelt attached But I could see if you really wanted it there. It should be able to transfer over to another cluster though, as the main thing it is concerned with is the speed pulser, found on all of them. One exception is if it has an upshift light. It would also control that. I think thats HF only though.

Thanks for your input Dave, so does this mean I don't need this piece, and what about the plug that goes into it?

This is a (1/2) picture from the back of a 90-91 cluster.
