Total newbie question...
I just got a Type-R, its a 98 stock with 20,000 miles on it, the guy who had it before me didn't mash it or much anything else; and since I just got it I'm not the best guy at driving it...but I wanted to know if my friend with a 330ci will beat me, he's an automatic...I think I'll beat him though, especially if I get my shifting down better, what do you guys think? Should I bet him money or no?
I personally don't think that racing for money is worth it anyway, just race him for the experience, for the respect that you get if you win. If you can drive you should totally be able to win, but I think that it will come down to if you can drive or not.
If you aren't used to it and have to race, keep it in a straight line. R's are tail happy.
Also, run it to the redline in everygear. Don't be a wuss, drive her like she was ment to be driven!!!

This really doesn't belong here. The ITR forum doesn't condone: This Vs. That posts.
But, since you are new I will suggest that you not race him Yet! Especially on an open road where there are other citizens wandering aimlessly. This doesn't mean that You should go to an abandoned road and do it either. You should take it to a track, 1/4 mile, course or Auto-X. Have your friend come with you and Then you guys duel it out like Cowboys!!!
My second and more important suggestion is that since you are new and admint to not knowing how to drive the R well; Go to a local Autocross event, pay your $20. and sign up for the novice catagory, and take a driving instructor for a spin. You will learn loads more than you ever will just playing on John Q. Publics streets of mayhem.
Another suggestion is to take a performance driver class or school and also last but, not least, hit a local PDA event at a local road course. Get INSTRUCTION!!! That is the key to being fast, faster than your friend and safe. Yo may think you know how to drive or even think you are a good driver BUT, chances are you have alot to learn and you will prosper from class/instruction in the future more than you can possibly imagine right now.
As for the R being able to beat the Beemer? Anythings possible. Hell, I've seen a CTR hybrid beat 90 other cars including 5 M3's and a Porsche 911 TT and 2 Vettes and a nice RX7 to round out the bunch.
Go to events take instruction, learn, have fun, "and trust me you will." But above all be safe.
IT would Suck major *** if you wrecked while racing your friend because you didn't know how to drive Well. Especailly since it's a CW, they're becomeing soo rare these days.
Good luck, and have fun...

PS The R is no more tail happy than said friends Beemer or many other performance cars. You just need to learn to drive it correctly.
