1999 Accord Tranny Question
This car is my girlfriend's sister car.
It's a 1999 Accord Coupe 4 cyl Automatic EX Leather with 95,000 miles on the clock.
When car is at a stop, when you start to accelerate, the tranny does not engage right away and when it does it the tires make a loud screech sounds.
Also while driving at a steady speed the tranny sometimes surges up and down.
I have changed the ATF and still the same condition, any ideas that is cheap fix ?

Nope, just expensive
Nope, just expensive
All Honda Electronic shift Automatics (both Accords and Civics) exibit a 5-6sec engagement delay when first put in gear (P-R,N-R,P-D,N-D you get the idea).
That is considered normal.
If the delay is longer than that, and has an associated noise along with it; it would seem the Transmission has a Pump/Torque Converter issue. The Pressure Pump in all Automatics incorporate a one-way check valve in the circuit which feeds the Torque Converter. This precludes the chance of the Converter' fluid draining back into the resevoir. If, for whatever reason, this check valve should not close, the converter will empty about 60% of it's ATF Fluid back into the reservoir. Long delays in engagement are often caused by the system having to wait until the converter refills and operating pressure is re-established.
It's going to act like the most radical "hole shot" converter out there. This isn't healthy and will cause collateral damage to other attached components (mounts, axles etc)
The noise is what concerns me. If I understand your symptoms, your sister's 2nd cousin (twice removed, on your fathers' side) is looking at the tranny going -----> South

Thanks for all the replies.....
The thing is that I'm not shifting the car from P to D(4), it just regular driving.
I'll be driving down the street and stop at a light, then wehn I accer. the car does not move but you hear the engine reving. Then the tranny engages, the car is sling shot forward and the tire make a screetching noise.
BTW: She has never changed the tranny fluid at 90,000 miles, I have just changed the other day and the color was pinch black.

Black as in Clutch material.
The transmission is not operating normally. It sounds like it looses pressure to the point at idle that it actually falls out of gear (insufficient pressure to keep clutches engaged)
Off to the Tranny Shop you go.....
sorry

I'd say if your looking to save money get a rebuild, also get it changed to manual.
manual trannys dont go out
clutches are cheaper than automatic trannys
Either way your gonna be spending a good amount of money unless your a mechanic or know one, then just pull a tranny yourself from a junkyard.

My Girlfriend's sister drive this Accord, she only knows how to drive an Auto only and do not want to learn to drive a manual.
Anybody know a ball park figure about repairing a auto tranny ?

For $1,800.00, I rather source a used tranny.
In Sol Cal, there should be plenty of them here.
Time for me to start looking.
