Default Problem: 96 EX Electric Fans come on ONLY w/the AC and at no other time: Why? Will run hot..

I thought maybe the fan motors died, but I've checked and they both come on when you turn the AC on. Otherwise, they don't come on at all. This is bad for having to sit in traffic or at a drive through for any length of time: she starts to wanna run hott.

So, the relay is fine (for the fans) , since that relay controls the AC as well as a few other electrtonics, so what else could it be? A temp sensor somewhere thats bad?

Info, thoughts?

Thanks

I'll definetly check this out when I get home, it could very well be part of the problem.

In on of the posts in the thread, a guy said that he was told his problem could be the waterpump going out.

I would like to mention that, when I'm driving around on a normal florida day (aka hot) my temp is fine. Now I'm sitting at a red light and the temp needle goes to 1/2 to a lil over (hot IMO). AS SOON as I start moving, I mean, almost b4 I get through the intersection, the temp falls back to normal.
I know this could be from airflow but its such a short time for it to cool so much..

Could it possibly be my waterpump isn't functioning as it should and at idle its just not as efficient as it should be?

It's supposed to run the fan after it gets a little hotter than normal. Maybe you just didn't let it get hot enough?

Check the circuit by unplugging the fan switch (on thermostat housing) & jumpering the wires together. Key on, that should make the fans run. If not, check for bad wiring.

If that's OK, put some cardboard over the grille, let it get a bit hotter. Just be prepared to remove it & start driving in case it still doesn't turn on the fan.

Or just replace the fan switch. If you're quick with the new one, you'll only spill a little bit of coolant.

No it is not the water pump or eles you will notice it. Reason for the car temp to drop back to normal is because when you are moving wind/air is cooling down the radiator and when you stop no more air is flowing so engine over heats. Picture it as riding a motorcycle down the road on a hot hot day and your riding and you feel that breeze in your face but when you come to a stop you start getting all hot again until you start to move again

But I'm not driving down the highway, it's a metter of feet. I mean, LITERALLY I was the first in line at the red light, it turns green and before I got through the interesection it was back to normal. Maybe 15 mph? ( I drive like a granny)

I woudln't think such a small flow of air would cool it SO QUICK. But I'll check the plug when I get to the house

the ETC switch runs at pepboys for about $20. so if u buy it and notice no diff then you can always return it.
