poor gas mileage! my wife just got an LS
Ok my wife just got an ls about a week ago now. she is telling me that she is getting bad gas miles out of the car telling me that her grand am gave her better gas mileage. i was like yeah right. so i took the car for the week filled it up and i had to do some running around, and sure enough it is getting shitty gas miles. i was able to only get like 250 out of a full tank. what should i change or check to get some better gas miles? the car is 100% stock. with my civic and it had a b16 in it and i was able to get at least 320 out of it.
I get about 240-260 mi. to a tank in my 01 ls, but I drive with a heavy foot, it depends on how you drive, you might want to change plugs, wires, air filter, oil, basic tune up stuff, but some cars just get bad mileage.
i wanted to check the tire pressure on the teg, what is the right psi 29 right? doesn't the obd1 set up only have one o2 sensor?

Make sure to check your cam timing in relation to the crank pulley mark. One tooth off and you will have crappy gas mileage and a generally weak performer. Ok, I admit, its probably a long shot, but could be your problem.
Could be a clogged cat converter.
I get 320-350 miles per tank on my RS, but I keep her tuned up nice. Oh, she also has 287,6xx milles. I will admit, I do have a valve ticking, and am losing some compression, but she still pulls alright. A rebuild is scheduled in couple months.

honestly i don't know it looks stock i just got the car lastweek everything on the car is 100% stock so it could be a stock cat but it doesn't have a lack of power because it is a pretty good rival to my boys ls being that it is an auto. so i don't think it is the cat! but i can check it
Damn, you jumped on that reply quick. Tune up would probably net you some better gas mileage. Man, by looking at how many posts you have, you could probably tell us what is wrong with it, lol.
As mentioned above do the basic tune up. When I changed my timing belt/water pump/tensioner a few weeks ago I also changed my plugs and wires. It increased my MPG from 27 to 30. I think 30 is the best you are supposed to get. I get just about 300 to 325 miles to a tank depending on how heavy my foot gets. I think the civics get like 40 MPG so don't expect the same mileage. Try http://www.fueleconomy.gov to find out exactly what you should be getting for your year car.
240 is a little low in general, i agree... even when i go kind of hard i get around 280... when i'm mostly on the highway and light-footed, i'll get close to 320. and that's about 11 gallons worth of gas, so you do the math. i'd say you might just need a tuneup, be lighter on the gas pedal, and not expect civic-like numbers... good luck!
Well, on our integras, when the gauge goes all the way down to E, we still have a good 3 gallons left in the tank. You will notice when you fill up ur car when it is a E, you can only put in 9-10 gallons in it. There is a 3 gallon reserve.
It also depends on what type of driving ur doing. My car in the city averages about 20 mpg. (With a heavy foot). But on the freeway, it goes up to 29 mpg. I know i should do a tune up but i inpected my plug wires and they have about 4-5k ohm resistance per foot at the worst, which is well under the 10k ohm per foot max. My plugs are also in very good condition for having 120 k on them. Once i get my cars bumper/fender fixed and painted in summer (Sitting in garage since august), i will do a tune up as well and ill see how much increase i will get even tho my **** (Plugs/wires) is still good.

there is a bit more to a new car tune-up.
You don't know what the car has been through before you got it. How it has been maintained. Take a lil extra time and money and get to know the car. If you have someone do this, you will be paying quite a bit. There are plenty of tech articles between:

Tune-up:
Fresh oil, 5w-30, 10w-30, 10w-40
oil filter how to change the oil
if no after market intake is present, replace paper filter element.
if aftermarket, clean the filter.
spark plugs, ngk
plug wires
distributor cap
rotor
fuel filter
injector cleaner is never a bad idea, I do it once every 6-months or so. Just dump it in the gas tank and go.
If you hear ticking on top of the engine when it is running, not the injectors openning and closing, but ticking, like the valves are out of adjustment, you should adjust the valves. If it hasn't been done in a while, you will pick up gas mileage and power. how to adjust the valves
since the car is new to you, you should change all the fluids.
cooling(anti-freeze) must be green. Orange antifreeze will turn to mud in the engine.
transmission fluid(should be changed whether or not it is a manual or automatic) how to change your manual tranny oil
engine oil
bleed the brakes when you get around to changing them.
Bleed the clutch (this applies to only manual transmissions)
tire air pressure: look inside driver side door, there should be a sticker, it will give air pressure values for front and rear.

my b16 im getting about 260 - 280 average for 12 gallons, with a p73 ecu.
thats normal driving, occasional heavy foot.
with tune-up, everything done...
tune-up will never hurt, esp if you just got the car and dont know when it was done last. see how it helps.
tire pressure, alignment, junk in the trunk, all affect gas mileage also.

its an auto: theres ur problem.
i was getting over 300mpg when my LS was auto. 2 years later, went down to about 220mpg.
changed my car to a stick and now getting about 260+mpg.
havn't changed my fuel filter and o2 sensors yet. and my tire pressure is off by a good amount.
Once is get everything done, I should get it back to the 300 range. unless i go turbo instead.

Wow, I didn't know it was a 3 gallon reserve. I'm usually in the 290 - 300 miles range when I hit the E.
I always wondered why the Empty Warning Light never turns on. When I fill it up it doesn't go over 10.5 gallons. Good to know. THANKS!

yeah i have the same prob... i am usually getting 240-260 on full tank... however everytime i fill up it doesn't let me fill up more than like 11.5 gallons.. and that with the empty warning light on. BTW my ls doesn't have the driver side sticker with all the info like the color code and the tire air pressure ect... I bought the car 3 months ago from a very respectable BMW dealership and it's one owner and was traded in. Anyway i was wondering if i take it to an Acura dealership can i get a new sticker?... and whats is the tire pressure that i should use, I have a 96 ls which came with stock 14 inch tires. The manual says 20psi for both front and rear on my ls, but that seems kinda low. And lasty i bought new tires and wheels and i was wondering whats the tire pressure that i should use on them? the tires are 205/40/17 I will be putting the on in Feb since they are Z rated and i live in snowy Chicago.

205/40/17, that's what I'm running, and I run 38psi. 44psi is max on my particular tires. The stock tires should be 28psi.

Yah, i remember seeing alot of gas mileage threads about it a year or two ago. Im not sure exactly how big it is, but on my car i can only fill up 9-10 gallons when the needle is on E and i know it is a 13 gallon tank. Tons of people were posting about it on here. Lots of threads about it.

my auto got about 200-250 to the tank. i didn't have any real serious mods but no matter what i changed (cap/rotor/wires/plugs/o2/fuel filter/cleaned injectors..etc.), i still got the same MPG.
Ya, the only one i cant see giving you better gas mileage is the fuel filter. I just dont see how they can improve gas mileage. Someone please tell me!!!!!
