Headunit skipping because of bass?
Hello.
Well I got my system in, I posted a little whiles back and I appreciate the help.
If you were wondering, Ill explain system first:
Panasonic CQ - C8100U
Sony 5 1/4" door speakers, Pioneer 6x9" rear deck speakers.
1 12" Audiobahn Aw1206t Subwoofer in a 3.5 cubic ft. ported box with plexiglass top.
Power Acoustik TS1920-2 amp - bridged ran parallel.
Power Acoustik 6-farad Capacitor.
Everything hooked up with 4-gauge power acoustik wiring kit.
Fatmat on Trunk Lid and Trunk. About to do the fender walls.
Alrighty, Well this system sounds really good besides for the massive rattling of some crap in the car I need to fix.
Now the problem is, My headunit. This headunit was quite expensive when I purchased last x-mas. Never had a problem til today. Had the system in a week. It seems if the cd is scratched just a tiny bit and theres a pretty good bass note, it skips. When the radio is on, I can turn it up as loud as I want and no skipping. Actually even if the cd is new it skips sometimes when the bass hits. Is there anything you guys can suggest? I know there's systems out there pushing even more power than mine and no cdplayer skipping.
Thanks a bunch, Justin

I would think so because it was installed by circuit city. It has like a casing it sits in and they took two screws and put it through the sides to keep it sturdy.
All the music when the bass hits usually, i had 2 10" kicker comps in the past and never had trouble like this. The cd can be scratch-free too. I mean I just paid all this money for that sound system and I cant even turn it up thats what makes me upset. I mean there's stereos out there that have so much more bass and there headunit doesn't skip.
I took it to circuit city ( bought, installed, and warrantied ). They told me theyll send to panasonic to be fixed. I don't know what happened to it though.

weird, you might have gotten dirt or something in the cd player and it made it hard for it to read the discs and when the extra vibration came it didn't help..

did u get a new alternator? does anyone know how much extra power the alterlator produces? 900 watts uses almost 63 amps of power...(900watts/14.4volts=62.5amps)

Nope. No new alternator. That's what the amp is rated at putting out rms. So i figured thats what it is pushing with 4 gauge wiring, not sure. I have a capacitor that with the car on no music runs around 14 volts??
caps actually add more strain because your alternator has to charge that too, while charging the battery, and running all the things in your car. So, unless your alternator can handle the extra current, the cap isn't helping at all. It's whats known as a bandaid, until your alternator dies.

I have so much things to fix on this car. But thanks for the advice. </TD></TR></TABLE> Yes the cap does help, it supplies the "surge" of power the amp needs when the bass "bumps" and although the cap is a another load for the alt. to charge, it is a small load, and the advantages of a cap far outweigh any disadvantage.
Also music is dynamic so you amp is not drawing 62.5A all the time, [if it ever does] the average current draw will be much lower.

Although a cap and batt. are not the same animal, they do work kind of the same way, they can both be charged, [and you don't need a 200A alt. to fully charge a 200 CCA batt] the same goes for the cap, [in fact it will charge off the batt.] they both hold a charge, [although a batt. will stay charged for a long time if it's not used] a cap will not, [if disconnected a 1 Fared will not last much more then 1 hour] [if still connected but batt. disconnected the cars dome light will drain the cap in less then 30 sec.] both a batt. and cap "release" power to a load, [amp] the batt. does it very slowly compared to the cap, [which is almost instant] and because music is dynamic, the cap will discharge on the bass note and recharge between the notes.
Keep in mind, this is a very simplistic explanation of how it works, but it does work.
