Default causes of early rev limiter engagement??

I've got a '95 civic EX. Runs great. I hit the Rev. limiter at 6K exactly, which is at least 1K lower than redline. What might be the cause of this? I've heard that a dented oil pan can be a cause, and I've noticed that there is a slight indentation of the bottom of the oil pan in the rear/center area that looks to be no more than 3-4mm deep. There are no engine codes being given.

Just looking for troubleshooting tips. Thanks
