Default belt screeching

hey guys..i have a problem...eveytime it is cold and i turn on the car there is a screeching sound coming from the engine(alternator belt) even if the motor is warm. do i need to tighten the belt up? And whats weird is that whenever my idle drops to like 650'ish the volts from the alternator/battery would go to 12 or 13 volts only and then when i accelerate it screeches until the volt goes back up to 14.5 again. I can see the volts dropping b/c of i have a vafc, but i need to do something about the screeching...its embarassing...so what do i need to do...help me out experts.....thanks a lot

just tighten the belt. The difference in your voltage is the alternator slipping on the belt. Have you ever replaced the belts? If not you may want to go ahead and do that.

If the belt is tight and still makes the noise from the ALT, replace the ALT.

so tighten up the belt and if that doesnt work then replace the alternator...so if the belt is tight...then the screeching is caused by the alternaotr being bad? Thanks

Pepboys sells belt dressing. It helps a lot to with the noise. I tried it before.

Sorry to say buddy but it doesnt realy help that much with this. Im having the same problem and i already got belt dresing. it worked for about a night and then the screeching came back. Its better to just actualy put the wrench time in and tighten it instead of havign to apply it over and over again.

Yes, of course. Tight it first then if it still doesn't help then belt dressing. That was what I meant.

Using belt dressing to quiet a belt is like putting a band-aide on an infected wound. It may be covered up but the problem is still there. Do it the right way and fix the problem, don't cover it up.
