Need help figuring out weird noise from the engine bay
Hi All,
I have '99 prelude, automatic transmission, no mod done at all.
I have some weird noise from the engine bay (i think). To describe the sound, it sounds like a metal grinding (but sound is more damped than sharp grinding noise) very slowly, pitch is pretty low, and frequency is maybe 60rpm.. It almost sounds like a belt is loose and is spinning out of it's place..
I first thought it might be transmission, but sound is still there when car is in neutral, or even in park. The sound is not always there, but it can be heard when engine is revving around 1k-2k. I can hear it more clearly when I am going up-heal, or cruising on local roads around 10-20mph.. It makes the noise no matter if car is going forward or reverse, and I never saw any engine check light come on.
Does anyone have any idea? I am thinking about bringing it to a shop for diagnosis, but thought I would get some valuable feedback from the experts on this forum.
Thanks in advance!

I had a similiar njoise at 1K-2K rpm in any gear, park, neutral, etc. I just got done with the timing belt, balance belt, water pump change. I also changed to manual tensioner. I'll bet its your tensioner. have a look at your timing belt tension. How many miles?
I have about 71k miles on my car. I have very limited knowledge about cars
I will try to find out where my timing belt/tensioner is.
Did those work you did fix your noise problem?

Well, as long as we are on funny noises coming from the engine.....
I have AEM cam gears installed... however, when we did it we just cut out the original plastic housing in two half moon shapes to accomodate the extra width of the AEM gears... now I'm getting a tapping (not the valves) from the gears hitting that plastic housing. Does anybody have that plastic completely removed? Problems with $hit getting in your timing belt that way?
