OK, track guys: e36 m3?
OK folks, i gotta question for you guys that track your ITRs. not autocross, not drag or street race, but road course. A bunch of my friends have e36 m3s, and i've made it my goal to be able to keep up with them on the road course. Now i dont have any dillusions, but how do you guys fare with these cars? I'm a member of the BMWCCA so i'll find out this summer when i start hittin up DEs, but i'm just curious as to your experiences. thanks.
this was discussed a while ago with a bit of fervor. The cars have similar pwr/weight ratios if you go by the manufacturer's ratings. Someone who had driven both said that the M gets out of the corners quicker due to its extra torque and being RWD, but that the R can brake later and enter the corners quicker due to its lighter weight. It basically depends on driver. I have been passed by many M3s on-track, but I have also passed 2 or 3.
Same level car prep, same level drivers, the E36 M3 has it by a few seconds a lap. There's a reason why ITR's are in touring classes and M3's are in GT in SWC...
At an amateur level, anything goes. I've passed numerous "faster" cars. Doesn't mean squat.

I agree with Ross and Warren, I have seen 'em at X and on tracks. Quite different automobiles with different characteristics.
It really all depends on driver skill and ability.
If you are better than all your friends like Pierre, then you will fare well. Notice I didn't say Beat! It's all in fun anyways, if they are your friends. Post some results I'd love to find out your experiences.
Good luck, Take the checker!!!

Is very depends on the driver as some people said already......I'm also a Bmwcca member and went to their driver school event for 3 years. Those M3 are pretty fast and great car for the track.
Last year when I went to Summit Pt and Jefferson circuit.......my R was very competitive with those M3 at Jefferson Circuit. However when we moved to Summit Pt on the next day, it became a different story.

thats what i'm thinking. For a while, I had figured i'd spend my money on the motor, back when my goal with 1035 was ###whp, etc. But then I remember that one of the reasons i actually bought the ITR was its track skillz. SO i figure i'll be focusing on making it fast around the track (brakes, sways, whatever i feel i'll need after my first DE) instead of fast in a line. I need to learn to drive it first, i'm sure a lot will be happy to hear that
thanks for the responses. Its friday, i'm in college. bottoms up guys!
