Default what would get better gas mileage

ok I am building a car I need to be reliable and get me across the country....I have an 88 hatch chell (not sure what it was,....had a turbo b16 in it now it doesn't even have interior) and an 88 dx that is a total (complete interior and a motor)....should I use the 4 speed on the dx or use the si tranny I got layin around...I just want it to be reliable and get good mileage. Also should I leave it DPFI or convert to mpfi I figure the DPFI would get me better mileage...

Also I plan on replacing, head gasket, timing belt, water pump, tensioner, valve cover gasket, spark plug seals, front and rear main seals, cam seal, intake manifold gasket, throttlebody gasket.......I have only worked with mpfi so is there anything else I should change....this thing needs to get me across the country

What clutch/pressure would I need if I used the si tranny?

dpfi 4speed would get you the best gasmilage (you wont be gettin anywhere fast though)

also think about replacing the dist. cap, rotor, spark plugs and plug wires. how many miles are on the shell? might think about the fuel filter.. but thats not always necessary

the odometer says 232,000 I think

The thing is though with the 4spd ,when your're on the highway the motor is just up there like it needs one more gear so I dont know..Where as the si you have 5th gear but the final drive is so high that the rpms are high in crusing..Plus with the 4spd you have to give it more gas just to get it to move..

I hope you know the CRX HF was mpfi for a reason...because it's more efficient.

EDIT: Compare the 4th and 5th gears rpms at 65mph (or whatev your highway speed is) if you wanna know which'll get you better mileage cross country.

When you are driving on the freeway, RPMs are about the same on a four speed and SI transmission. Trust me, I have had one. From what I have heard, the four speed is just an HF transmission without its fifth gear.

mpfi 5sp > dpfi 4sp

and you are on the right track as far as replacing water pump, belt, plugs, ETC

DPFI is terribly inefficient, it was never used on an economy model either. It would not get better gas mileage, it's just cheaper to make.

Exactly. As someone pointed out eariler, the HF (which was built solely for fuel economy) used MPFI. MPFI, after all, results in better control of the mixture on each cylinder, which helps both power and fuel economy. The STD and DX, on the other hand, were both made mainly to be cheap to buy
