A+ for doing it yourself.

D for function. Probably should have looked at some professional cages before attempting to design your own.

F for CapLocks and not just posting this in the Picture Thread

Indeed. The design is very poor.

you have to go with more of a shape to the car i mean look how that just slopes down even though theres no one gonna be riding in the back its still gonna crush pretty good u want it to at least be a lil more squared in the back instead of going straight down when u get to the back of an hatch that cage be longs in an crx search in the drag racing sections and you'll get more of an idea of what im saying

It should look more like mine:

You want it to conform as closely as possible to the interior dimensions of the car, to minimize crushing and keep the shell as intact as possible around the occupant(s).

Build specifications such as tubing size, angle ranges, required bars, mounting plate sizes, and other details for a proper cage are always laid out by the sanctioning bodies you intend to race with (i.e. SCCA, FIA, NASA, and NHRA each have their own separate rules, regulations, and requirements for cage design). It is always smart to adhere to a rule set when fabricating a cage in order to do it right the first time. Remember, this is safety equipment - not bling.

Nice looking EF, I don't see that color too much on these HBs. I agree the cage comments though, you really should have made it closer to the b-pillars and roof line to make it more effective safty wise. Since you did it for free I say do some reasearch and see if you can make a more "legal" style as far as fit and what not, I know from what I have heard it is not easy to do a cage so for a first try I probably would not have done much better so props to you. But hey if it's free I say don't quit til it's right.

Just gonna add something; The triangle is the strongest geometric shape. Which is why Targa's roll cage is nothing but triangles. Those rectangle sections on the rear section of that first cage are almost useless.

roll bar, not cage.. there's nothing running forward of the seats.

and ya.. that wont get passed through any racing sanctions at all, no gussets, no wall thickness holes, to far from body panels, no x-pieces for support (the triangle comment is true, why, because once the lengths of a triangle are set they cannot be changed unless broken apart).

if the cage was more for looks then function then its purpose was fulfilled.

Kirk Racing also makes a good pre-fabbed bar/cage that is SCCA/NASA legal. I don't know if they do NHRA-compliant stuff though. What sanctioning body do you intend to race with in the future?

If you were closer to Pittsburgh, I'd send you to Domination Chassis, which is where I had my custom bar built.
