Default Thinking about moding my sunroof, looking for info from people that have worked on them

I am thinking about pulling the motor out and all of the hardware except the slide mechanism. I have a question for anyone that has messed with these before.
I would like to keep the sunroof, so I don't want to plug it. If I remove the "guts" could I slide it by hand when I wanted it open or shut? Anyone else do this?

Thanks.

A kid near me molded his si.. he took the sunroof and all componets out ( which are heavier than you think. ) and he got a dx headliner and you can't even tell it was ever an si

whats the point of buying an Si then?? Thats one of the main things that sets it apart. If you dont want a sun roof then go buy a DX. Dont waist a perfectly good car and mold the sun roof. Hell, dont even listen to this guy.

if that's the reason you bought an si, then i'm pretty sure any argument i have here will be wasted, but...

drive a hf, a dx, and an si back to back in otherwise equal csp trim- then we can talk. and i'm pretty sure the first word you say won't be "sunroof".

the whole assembly weighs 33 lbs. and it's at the highest part of the car, making it great weight to save. i love the sunroof in my street crx (no ac makes it sort of necessay), but i'll never miss it again in my autox car.

to the original poster- you aren't going to save a lot, but if that's where you're comfortable, i won't try to sway you. i'm not sure your plan will work though, as it seems like there would be keeping everything in place, not to mention that i have no experience (does anyone?) trying to open the roof in any other way than the switch or the manual screw. is there anything left that would keep it from being a floppy and unusable mess?

Thanks for the input.
I understand the comments.
If the track assembly is left intact and only the motor, cables are removed I don't think it will be floppy.
My biggest concern would be the answer to your other question.."could you function the sunroof without using the button?" That is the main information I am looking for now. I am sure someone has done maintanance on one of these and can answer that question. With that information I can make a number of decisions.
My worry is that it is not possible to cycle it.

My question is how will you secure it from not sliding open under heavy acceleration or from having a theft come in through the roof?

It probably would not open under heavy acceleration because you would have to push it up before it would go back.
As for theft, that would be a problem.
My car lives in my garage-work-autocross-and fun drives.
It is never left anywhere to get broken in to.

Anyone worked on these?
