Default Neo-Gen vs. ES 100 vs. Ecsta MX vs. RS-2 opinions needed..

I am going to be buying a set of tires pretty soon for the street...205/50/15...I am looking for a tire that will grip pretty good on the straights and decent in the corners because I'm more of a drag than autocrossing. These were what I came up with that has a price from 60-85 bucks. If you guys have any other tires that are in the same price range..feel free to post them up.

The Neo Gens were the cheapest at 65 or something and i've heard decent reviews about them

The rest are from 75-85.00 so they are pretty much around the same price range. And I was kinda leaning towards the MX just because of the bigger tread blocks as compared to the ES 100 and the RS-2, so it might grip a little better for straight line acceleration..but thats just my thought..

So with that in mind, what are your thoughts?? thanks in advance

Well, as usual, it really depends on how much you're willing to trade off performance against value (price and treadlife).

Before I continue, may I ask why you haven't mentioned the Falken Azenis RT-615, which is now $78/tire in 205/50-15 (at Vulcan)? Is it because they wear so fast? Because the RT-615 will out-perform any of these in sheer grip, straight line as well as cornering.

In terms of dry performance, you are really talking about big differences in performance. I would rank the tires you've chosen, and a few others I'll add, as follows for sheer performance:

1. Falken Azenis RT-615 $78
2. Hankook RS-2 Z212 $85
3. Kumho MX $80
4. Kumho Ecsta SPT $62
Dunlop Direzza DZ101 $59
Yokohama AVS ES100 $75

As you go down the list from number 1 to number 4, performance goes down, but tread life goes up. The Falkens are especially fast wearing; I've heard similar things about the Hankook but I don't know anyone who has used up a set to provide numbers for comparison.

If you don't mind rapid tread wear, then I would get the Falken RT-615 as my first choice, and the Hankook Z212 as my second choice. If you're just a little concerned, then the Kumho MX might be a good choice among these. But if value (price and treadlife) is a major factor for you, then I would consider one of the last three tires. All three offer similar performance, but in this particular size (205/50-15) the Yokohama ES100 is more expensive, so I would take the SPT or the DZ101 over the ES100. If you can use 195/55-15, then the ES100 is priced similarly to the SPT.

(FWIW, the RT-615 was fastest against the fourth-place Z212 and the fifth-place MX in the Grassroots Motorsport test, and in the Car and Driver test, the Z212 was fifth and the MX was eleventh.)

I haven't heard anything at all about the Nitto, so I am not commenting on it (but I would want to know more about it before buying, since I know that the SPT and the DZ101 are both very good tires for a price that's less than the Nitto).

(Above prices are from the Tire Rack, except the Falken price is from Vulcan and the Hankook price is from Discount Tire Direct.)

thanks for the input, I am probably looking for something thats gonna last around the three four months of the warm season here in minnesota if not more. I didn't mention the Azenis because of the weight of the tire, i know it has a pretty stiff sideway and the tire weight will be quite a bit more.

How fast does the Azenis 615 wear?? I'm gonna be daily driving it for 5 months or so and I usually average about 20,000 miles or so in 5 months. If the Azenis will be able to last with proper toe settings then I'd consider...I just don't want something that wears out within 10,000 miles or so.

i am still debating so either of these is still a possibility. thanks

Because of its excellent traction, the weight really isn't an issue. However...

<TABLE WIDTH="90%" CELLSPACING=0 CELLPADDING=0 ALIGN=CENTER><TR><TD>Quote, originally posted by slowsleeper &raquo;</TD></TR><TR><TD CLASS="quote">How fast does the Azenis 615 wear?? Then don't get the Azenis OR the Hankook Z212.

Quite aside from the price vs performance trade-off, you just can't get a tire that has both heart-stopping traction and long life in the same tire. It just isn't going to happen. Since the treadlife is important to you, you're going to have to settle for lower performance (less traction, both straight line and in cornering). Get either the Kumho MX, which should be good for 20K miles, or one of those last three tires I listed, which should give you 25-40K. (The edgeracing.com deal on the DZ101 sounds particularly attractive - thanks SWC for posting!)

I've been very impressed with my Dunlop Direzza DZ101's...I got them for $56 per tire at TireRack.com back in June 2005. The sidewalls are noticably thinner/spongier than my old Kumho MX's but the tires are super sticky. I only had time for one Auto-X event last season...and they felt great.
