Default The number one reason not to run z-rated rubber in the winter, and my save!

Well this morning I took my mom's dog to the groomer in my beater, and on the way back I caught a nasty drift inducing a spin. In picture #1 you can see the drifted snow in the background. I was headed directly for a guardrail see pic 3, but I yanked the e-brake, and countersteered and amazingly safely dumped it in an EF deep ditch. This was all done at 45mph. By the time I saw the snow on the exit of the turn it was too late and I was allready spinning. There was no damage to the car, and I was not cited. Sumitomo HTR-Z's should never be used in the snow, ever. I'm buying a set of snow tires for my HX wheels tomorrow. Either I'm lucky or just really good. Enjoy the pics!!!

You are really really lucky.

A tire that says no snow means it. snag some blizzaks and good to see you were unharmed

Thank you sir.

I tried my best to save the ship and I did. The bad thing about it, if I would have gotten cited I would have lost my job I just got, that pays 4 times what my current job pays. I was seriously flipping out when the OHP got there. I got lucky x10.

i learned that the hard way also.. your not alone. i took out the entire front passenger side suspension on my car though before i learned..

its all fixed now, and i snagged some mud and snow tires called Pacemark Snotracker's for $180 installed for 4 tires from Sam's.. they ride like hell in the dry but it drives like an indy car in the snow.

blizzaks are freakin hot, if youve got lots of money get those.. i just couldnt afford them.

wow you got as lucky as me. i was victim to a similar incedent a few years back in my integra, but it started with me making a dumbass move and not the tires. i met a friend at his work one night (gas station) about the time he was getting off. we had to take the interstate back to town, and about that time, it started to snow really heavy. before we left, we decided to see who could make it back to town first.....(about a 15 mile drive on interstate 69 between pendleton IN and anderson IN) we both hit the interstate at the same time and reached speeds of 90+ mph in the snow (uh...yeah...really stupid i know). to make a long story short, i beat him back to the exit ramp by a few car lengths, and with him right behind me, i decided to showboat a lil bit and drift thru the snow to the end of the exit ramp. well....i pull the E-brake at around 55 mph, countersteer into a drift, and continue on my merry way down the ramp half-sideways. i then think to myself, "ok time to stop before i wreck", so i let the e-brake down to regain control.......and thats when all hell broke loose. as soon as i exited the "drift", the rearend straightened up, and then continued to slide out in the other direction, turning me backwards at 50 - 55 mph. next thing i know, i'm sliding down the exit ramp backwards, with my friend's car less than 20 ft from my front bumper, and he is sliding around a little too. this is when i start thinking.....am i gonna flip when i fly off in the ditch.....or is my buddy gonna hit me head on?????.....oh crap, i dont have my seatbelt on! a few seconds later, im flying off into the ditch and come to a rest at the bottom. luckily enough, we were able to push the car around enough to drive it to the end of the ditch and get back on the road. no ticket....no injuries....no damage to my car.... just a change of pants required.

Now that you have a better paying job, buy yourself a different daily driver, and leave that hatch for when the roads are dry. I'd hate to see another JDM front end get destroyed.

My hatch is my beater, and will stay my beater, My new job is on the road allot, and no reason to buy a nicer daily and run it into the ground. I have a crx that is way nicer, that most of you have probally either forgotten about, or never seen. I'm gonna buy some snow tires for the hatch, and an HF tranny, then it will be the ultimate commuter pile. I would really like to drive my Samurai in bad weather, but twisted an axle last time I drove it, and couldn't afford 31 splined units with my old job, so it just sat. Now it will get put back together for these kind of days. In the Samurai I could have driven right out of that mess.

The Frontend is a little rough now anyway, had an ice storm incident last winter. I just can't beleive I made it out of this one unscathed. I thought something was seriously wrong for a minute, because I had about 12lbs of terra firma packed in the left rear wheel, making the whole car shake violently. At the end of the day, I installed new plug wires, after this incident, which fixxed a low RPM miss, I've had forever, killing my gas mileage, gave the hatch a bath, and wasted an hr, and a half stuck in a ditch. All in all it wasn't such a bad day. I could have been worse. It's not everyday you stuff a car in a ditch like that, and by then of the day, it is in better running condition.

I wish I could fit 13's on my car, and get some real pizza cutting action going, with some 155/13's. http://www.tirerack.com/tires/...ace=2

Thos look hot for the price, and will clear my brakes.

You are lucky.

You didn't kill anyone traveling the other direction.

No kidding. I've got some kind of sumitomo tire that's discontinued and getting bald, definately a bad choice for a snow storm in a < 2000lb CRX.

Dang Bart winter hates that car. First the ice storm now in the ditch. If it were anyone else I would have to say quit screwing around but since I know you weren't being stupid I just say glad it wasn't worse.

Doesn't look like you did any damage. And good thing the OHP was "cool" about it.
