Default what are the correct tire size for 17" rims?

i just bought a set of 17x7 rims with a 42 offset. What would the right tire size be for them? Oh yeah, rims will be going on my 5th gen prelude. Also does anyone know how much the stock SH rims weigh? My new 17" rims are about 16 lbs. each.

i have 205/45-17. i have also heard that 215/40-17 will work if you want some extra grip, i have always wanted to try this tire size and i think this size is cheaper too.

215 is as big as you should go on a 7" rim. Even that's pushing it. I know I'm opening the door for a bunch of posts that say:

"I've got 225s on my 17x7 wheels and they're fine!"

...but 215 is the biggest you can go without having to worry about rolling the tire off the bead...

I run 215/45/17... I used to use a 40 series sidewall, but wanted the extra pothole insurance. I rub slightly on heavy cornering, but its no big deal at all.

this is definitely sober's own opinion, which i respect, but a 17x7 is going to be fine all the way up to 235. the performance will be ****, and you won't be helping yourself, but you can do it.

in the same vein, people mount 225's on 6.5" and 6" wheels, 205's on 5" wheels, etc etc.

anyway, 215/40/17 is the best size for that rim.
