probably a dying cv shaft. get underneath and see if it's all broken apart.

it's sometimes hard to tell the smoke color, it's easier to go by smell.
does it spell like burnt oil?

I think I paid like 14 bucks at Advanced for a new CV boot and put it together myself. They're not expensive, and not too hard to figure out how to take apart.

Worn CV joint (what the boot is covering). You need to replace the axle or rebuild the CV joint, but replacing the axle would be simpler, but I never done a rebuild on a CV joint.

the axle is made up of 3 parts, two cv joints and the shaft. you need to replace the whole thing, a boot won't fix the thumping noise. when the boot blew, all the lubricating grease flung out (it get all over everything, you find out what i mean when you take the wheel off) and dirt and grime got into the joint and wear it prematurely and then you get the thumping noise you have. Replace the whole axle and you'll be find

No, the axle is the whole unit and the CV joint is the constant velocity joint on the wheel side of the axle. The clicking you are hearing is the CV joint rubbing against itself since there is no longer grease in the joint. Once your boot tears and throws all your grease out this is what happens, you can repack the joint with grease and install a new boot if there is no damage to the joint (if it has not been clicking long), if the joint went to long w/o grease then it is beyond rebuilding and should just be replaced with a reman unit from Napa/auto zone/advance or Pep boys. I have rebuilt CV joints after they just started clicking and it was fine but you may want to just replace yours because it does not sound like you could accurately tell if yours is ok or not.

Whew I hope this helps because that was alot of typing.

wow thanks for letting me know if it is still good or not!
the problem only started like 3 days ago!

should i go get the cv boot(does it come with grease) then?

how often do these things last or need to be replaced?

the pass few months i also notice this weird noise that sounds liek this:

whop whop whop whop when driving but when i press on the brakes the noise goes away. Could the axle be causing this problem also?

90k miles seems to be the average lifespan I have seen on these axles/cv boots but it does depend on where you live and other factors. Again though it is hard to tell you to do this yourself, yes replacing a CV boot at a shop is easy and takes around 20 mins total but if you have never done one and you don't have anybody around that has done one or you don't have access to a shop then this can be a PAIN IN THE ***. If this is a driveway project i would just swap the axle and then you don't have to worry about the joint being good or not once you are done, besides do you have a CV boot clamp tool?? if not just replace the axle. that's my 2 cents

Not worth 50$???? You will make more money on the car if the CV joint is fixed, the more problems you car has when you sale it the the smaller the price will be, easy and cheap fix.

How much is it worth after failing smog check?? That's like asking me how much my car is worth now that is't wrecked???? You can't tell w/o actually seeing it, it just depends on what made it fail and how much repair it will take to fix.

I have the same problem with my civic. One thing I noticed when I had my car on a lift was damage to the left side axle. If you can get your car on the lift, spin the wheels and inspect the axle for damage. Mine appeared to have been lightly shaved in one specific area (whatever it was rubbing against is beyond me).

It was suggested to me that the CV joint was the problem. After replacing both axles the noise still continues. I am now thinking it's a front-end control arm or other suspension problem. Maybe a new axle will work for you. Didn't work for me. The noise is getting more severe as I continue driving. 6 months and 50k miles later (suck it, geico!) it sounds like something's gonna snap.

ck123.. just replace the whole axle it may cost more but it will be a less of a headache..axles don't need to be replace unless it's damaged or broken.

posterfee...u may have a wheel bearing going out.
