auto prelude
hello i recelenty raced a automatic prelude.. its a 99 model and i raced him in my d16y8 with intake header. and i beat him by little over 2 lengths.. could anyone tell me why the automatics are so slow. the kid is pissed that my sohc wooped his h22. so can anyone explain.. and tell me the 0-60 and 1/4 mile times
automatic transmissions are not as efficient as manuals. there are many things which create drag in an automatic. especially automatic transaxles becuase they use a chain. they have a pump which requires engine torque. a torque converter weights about twice as much as a clutch. a clutch is on average 99.2% efficient while a torque converter which is not in lockup is only 90% efficient. that means that on average if you have 100 ft lbs input to the impeller you will only have on average 90 ft lbs torque output on the turbine. the 10 ft lbs of torque is transferred into heat energy. there are many downsides to the automatic transmissions. the reason we have automatic transmissions is because people are getting lazier and stupider. they dont want to worry about shifting, all they want to do is push a pedal and go. automatics suck ***.
also, those "sportshift" things where you can shift your automatic manually are complete bs. your transmissions shifts when the torque converter reaches stall speed which is where you will accelerate the quickest. its just a selling item.

The automatic transmission doesn't shift at it's stall speed, it shifts at its shift point which is programmed in the ECU, or mechanically calibrated in the valve body. Stall speed with only affect your launch speed, and it is adjustable by modification of the torque converter. Furthermore, from your previous post, the M6HA along with other Honda automatics doesn't use a chain. The main and secondary shafts connect via the geartrain to the countershaft.
The Honda automatics are actually very efficient transmissions. The lock-up torque converter and the clutch to clutch geartrain is essentially the same as a manual transmission when fully engaged. Under transient situations the transmission is not as efficient, but it is much better than a conventional planetary transmission. The shortcomings of the M6HA come from the mass / inertia of the torque converter (which is essentially inefficient, but a necessary feature of an automatic), the fact that the transmission has only four speeds (instead of the manual's five), and the tuning of the transmission for fuel economy. If Honda had built the Prelude with a five speed automatic, a higher stall torque converter, and more aggressive tuning for shifts (both software and hardware), the automatic Prelude would be nearly as qick as the manual Prelude. However, fuel economy may suffer a bit.

actually..how do we use the 'sport' button..if i wanna drag..what the best way?
1.put in the sport mode..D4 gear...and just press the accelator hard
2.put in the sport mode..1,shift into to around 7500 rpm,then 2nd,D3 then D4..
how..i always drag with my friend..civic 4 doors with b16a average mod..cannot win him..
