Engine making rattling sounds and eating oil. HELP!
Whenever i drive the car and the throttle is between 20-50% throttle it make a 'rocks in a can' rattling sound, but when i put it beyond 50% and let it back down between that range, no rattling. Ive replaced spark plugs, wires, and air filter.
Also im using about a quart of oil every week and its not leaking. Bad rings? Head Gasket?
One more thing is that when i first start my car and until it gets to normal temp i smell Antifreeze in the car, then it goes away, especially does this in the morning. Antifreeze level is fine.
BTW engine has 192k on it.
thanks

Okay heres another suggestions.... try using a higher octane because it burns slower... or you can try seafoam which i did and it went away. The rattling didn't go away instantly but it gradually did.
That "Rocks in a can" sound like mentioned is detonation, you need to find out why your running lean before you start driving it again.
For the oil, does a lot of smoke come out of your tail pipe? If so your rings are burnt from running lean and burning up.
and if your smelling coolant inside your car but not out side most likely your heater core has a leak, do you see any coolant at your floor boards? If so have fun taking out your dash

You can buy timing lights for cheap, or have a shop do it for cheap as well. This is a serious issue, if you keep driving like this you will loose your engine. How long has this been happening? As mentioned it does sound like your rings are fried and letting oil go right through them. At 192K it might be time for a rebuild, let us know what you find.

well its my Daily and i would have to do 1k worth of work on my lincoln to get it going again. Is the timing light the only thing i can do. but teh weird thing for me is that when i put the gas beyond 50% and take it back down to 10-40% it doesnt rattle.
From what i can tell is that no smoke comes out the back. and it really hasnt been bad for the last couple weeks but when it was like 10* in the morning is when it was the worst and i couldnt tell from the cold air crap coming out(forgot the real name).
No Antifreeze on floor, same as above since it has warmed up a little there hasnt been the smell.

Well if you get the lean out condition fixed you could prly drive it for a few months but it might run like ****, and still burn ungodly amounts of oil.
Exactly how do i use seafoam.
Also my timing belt whines when i accelerate, could that have to do with anything. Got car at 177k in august have no idea on matenence records.

the rattling like rocks in a can is a clear of detonation. detonation is caused by a lean(not enough fuel for the amount of air taken in) condition in the motor. grade of gas has a lil to do with it but so does brand of gas, ignition timming, and wheter the injectors are still flowwing the same rate. also want to look into maintence is the thermastate good does the fule filter need to be changed. for 50% and down question. when you accelerate to 50% or higher your car has enought fuel for the amount of air and when you let off the pedal your not taking in any more air so no increase in fuel is needed so no rattle.

awesome thanks for answering the 50% thing. Where should be the first place i look?
the rattling started happening when my car started heating up in september in Phoenix. my antifreeze was boiling after a while. i replaced the cap and had no boiling but car would still overheat unless i turned on the heater. i just needed to switch it to hot not even turn it on. and now in utah it doesnt heat up like it did. the radiator is new, the hoses are new. so im going to replace the thermostat soon. so after that where?
