Wider tires
I plan on buying ziex 512's for my gsr but i was thinking of going with 205/55 instead of 195/55. Are there any downsides to this and would the side wall get softer or harder the wider i go?

well a downside would be you would have a bigger diameter and circumfrance. So you may have some rubbing (not likely unless you dropped it already) and your speedometer and odometer would under read. so you will be speeding and not even know it. Also a bigger diameter affects acceleration.
but to quote nsxtasy: "don't concentrate on getting bigger tires, cocentrate on getting better tires" he will probably be also come online shortly and be really kind and helpful and give a list of tires and prices that he recommends.
but just to be sure and help other's trying to help you, what tire size....15" i assume?

I agree completely. The Ziex (full name Falken Ziex ZE-512) is an all-season tire, for people who need to use the same tires on snow and frigid cold as well as moderate to warm temperatures. If you don't need to drive in winter conditions, then summer tires like the ES100 and SPT will perform much, much, MUCH better than the Ziex 512.

yep 205/50/15 would be a good size for you and also like nsxtasy said if you really don't need an all season tire don't get one. You will be much more happier with either the es100 or the kumho SPT.

The ES100 is excellent in the rain. See h-t comments here.
And the SPT is even better in the rain than the ES100. See the Tire Rack comparison test here.

why not 205/55/15 instead of 205/50/15?? wont that throw off the speed a bit since its a shorter tire?

sorry, yes 205/55/15 will work too, but is an uncommon size for a civic.
I forgot to add, the ones I listed are common sizes that I know forsure have a large tire selection. if you lowered, the ones I listed are also better then the high sidewall of 205/55

195/55-15 is the best size for your GS-R. That's the stock size.
You can use 205/50-15 if the tire you're looking at doesn't come in 195/55-15. That will throw off your speedometer and odometer by 1.6 percent, which is not too bad. Anything more than that is not a good idea at all. Keep your outer diameter within 2 percent of stock.
Since the Kumho SPT and the Yokohama ES100 both come in 195/55-15, and they're reasonably priced in that size (around $60/tire), just get the 195/55-15.
