Best tire size for 16x8 Rota Slipstreams
hey guys these wheels are for my prelude. what is the best tire size for these wheels. help me, i tried 225/50/16 and they were huge! I want to stay around a 45-50 profile. Any help is greatly appreciated, and pics if anyone has any. Thanks
Hi Cooper,
Your car came from the factory with 205/50-16 tires, so that would be the best size. However, most 205/50-16 tires aren't approved for rims that wide; the typical range of approved rim widths for 205/50-16 tires is 5.5-7.5 inches.
Why did you get rims that are too wide for stock-sized tires? Is this for the racetrack, or car shows, or...? Daily driving? Also, will you be using these tires when it snows out (so you want all-season tires), or do you have separate tires (or a separate vehicle) for winter use?
A few tires come in 225/45-16 and are approved for 16x8 rims, including the Yokohama ES100 "budget performance" summer tire for $96, and the top-of-the-line Bridgestone Potenza S-03 summer tire for $191. This size would maintain the stock outer diameter for your car, and probably won't rub. If you're stuck with those wheels, this is the size I would recommend.

thanks nsxtasy...i guess the salesman talked me into these sized wheels, saying that they would fit fine. i was initialy interested for maybe getting into some auto-x at a track near me. so i am stuck with these wheels. is a 40 profile too small? also why not choose a 215 width, i am failry new to all this suspension and wheel stuff. i will go with any type of budget performance tires for now. i was thinkin of a 225/40/16 kuhmo ecsta supra 712. i already have these tires brand new in a 225/50/16 size, which are too big.

Translation: That's probably what they had in stock.

That's okay. For autocross purposes, it's not such a bad choice to have wider wheels and wider tires.

Basically, yes. With a 225 tread width, they would be too small in diameter (4.1 percent less than stock); with anything wider, they would probably rub on the fender wells or wheel well liners.

Because there are very few tires available in 215/45-16 or 215/50-16, and because it's not as close a match in outer diameter as 225/45-16.

Again, get 225/45-16, not 225/40-16, which is MUCH too small for your car. Also, the Kumho Ecsta Supra 712 is not a very good tire. Other tires have come on the market that are much better in the same price range, which is why Kumho is replacing the 712 with the Kumho Ecsta SPT, which is one of those much better tires (but doesn't come in 225/45-16). The Yokohama ES100 tire is much, much better than the 712, and is available in 225/45-16, as noted above. The Tire Rack did a side-by-side comparison test between the Yokohama ES100 and the Kumho 712, and the ES100 beat the 712 in all 23 out of the 23 performance characteristics tested - a clean sweep.
